Intern: Software Engineer, Open Source Developer Tools for Hard Real-Time Software Development

AI overview

Contribute to the open source community by improving developer tooling for hard real-time software, enabling quality extensions for robotics platforms like Intrinsic FlowState.

Intrinsic is Alphabet’s bet aiming to reimagine the potential of industrial robotics. Our team believes that advances in AI, perception and simulation will redefine what’s possible for industrial robotics in the near future – with software and data at the core.

Our mission is to make industrial robotics intelligent, accessible, and usable for millions more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers. We are a dynamic team of engineers, roboticists, designers, and technologists who are passionate about unlocking the creative and economic potential of industrial robotics.

Role

Intrinsic’s goal is to democratize robotics, and part of that is giving back to the open source community. During this internship, you will improve our developer tooling for hard real-time code, and share that tooling with the community through open-source contributions.  The tooling will enable third-party developers to write high quality extensions for both Intrinsic FlowState and other robotics stacks, like ros2_control, and contribute to raising the quality and reliability of hardware integrations and controllers.

How your work moves the mission forward

  • Develop low-level diagnostic tools for hard real-time software development in C++.
  • Adapt parts of our existing code base to allow for an open source release.
  • Contribute towards the development of robotics software (including our platform Flowstate).
  • Collaborate with, and learn from, a team of experienced professionals in modern software development practices.

Skills you will need to be successful

  • Bachelor’s student in Computer Science or related field required (Master's students preferred).
  • Experience building hard real-time systems in C++.
  • Interest in distributing software libraries via git / GitHub.
  • Familiarity with one or more build systems (Bazel, CMake, etc.).
  • Preferrably first experience with ROS2
