Whip Around was  born in 2016, originally to help freight companies in New Zealand tackle their paper-based compliance burden. It was whilst working for some of the globe’s largest freight companies, that we saw first-hand how much time paper was costing fleet managers every day. Within a year, the US market was calling loudly as Whip Around met a clear pain point for businesses with fleets.  Whip Around now services customers from coast to coast in the US and around the world.

As an Intermediate Engineer at Whip Around your focus will be to create world-class solutions for our customers! Whip Around is quickly becoming the software platform of choice for business owners, fleet managers and drivers with dedication to workplace safety. Through a mixture of new features and improvements you will work with our team of creators to consistently raise the bar on user experiences and deliver key solutions to our customers.

What success will look like

• Clean and testable back end code is written and there is a high degree of confidence in your ability to build with quality.
• Critical feedback is sought out and you are open to receiving and implementing feedback during code reviews.
• Proactively seek opportunities to coach and mentor your team.
• A high level of collaboration takes place with other engineers to design and deliver project-level solutions.
• Work closely with the Product team to ensure seamless user experiences through effective communication and technical advice.
• Strong relationships are formed with your peers across the business - Product, Marketing, Design, Implementation, CS.
• Provide Input into our engineering practice, governance, and help create our engineering roadmap.
• Create simple and intuitive web applications for a range of different end users.
• Design, develop and maintain your application keeping scalability and performance in mind.
• Own all aspects of back end development for your application.
• Work closely with end users to understand pain-points and specific use-cases.
• Take full ownership of the product/feature from idea to operating in production.
• Work effectively with product managers, other engineers and business stakeholders on the project.
• Drives innovation within Whip Around, proposing and implementing new technologies or methods that improve system performance or user experiences.
• Iterate quickly and incorporate feedback to improve the feature.

Requirements

• Technical competency: The ability to write robust, manageable, and scalable code for major new features in existing systems, balancing the implementation of pure and pragmatic solutions as needed.

Experience

• Useful BSc in Computer Science, BE in Software Engineering, or other relevant qualifications.
• Strong PHP skills and relevant frameworks (e.g. Laravel, Symfony) are recommended but not required; however, you are familiar good coding practices (YAGNI, SOLID) and common design patterns.
• Solid commercial experience with React.
• Experience writing unit tests and highly secure web applications
• Personal projects! An app or a portfolio of apps that you have built outside of work.
• Experience working in agile development teams that applied and experimented with infrastructure automation, continuous integration, continuous delivery
• Experience with core AWS web-enabling technologies
