Interim IT Manager
Location: Remote / Hybrid
Employment Type: Interim (Contract or Fixed-Term)
Reports To: Chief People Officer / COO
Role Overview
The Interim IT Manager will be responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and effectiveness of all internal IT services while acting as the primary owner of the Managed Service Provider (MSP) relationship. This role blends strategic oversight with hands-on execution, supporting employees across the organization and serving as the technical point of accountability for the company’s core software platforms.
This role is ideal for an experienced IT leader who can step in quickly, bring structure and clarity, and elevate IT operations without overengineering.
Key Responsibilities
MSP Oversight & Vendor Management
- Act as the primary point of contact and escalation for the Managed Service Provider (MSP).
- Hold the MSP accountable to SLAs, performance metrics, and service quality.
- Review MSP tickets, response times, recurring issues, and root cause analyses.
- Lead regular operational reviews with the MSP and drive continuous improvement.
- Manage and negotiate MSP contracts, renewals, and scope changes as required.
Internal IT Support & Operations
- Own day-to-day internal IT support for all employees (directly or via MSP), including:
- Onboarding and offboarding (accounts, devices, access)
- Hardware provisioning and asset management
- Troubleshooting end-user issues across hardware, software, and connectivity
- Ensure seamless support for a distributed/remote workforce.
- Establish and document clear IT processes, playbooks, and knowledge base materials.
- Improve overall IT service delivery, satisfaction, and operational maturity.
SaaS Platform Technical Ownership
Serve as the technical owner (or co-owner with business leads) for major software platforms, including but not limited to:
- Identity & access management (e.g., Azure AD, Google Workspace, M365)
- HRIS / People systems (e.g., BambooHR, )
- Financial systems (e.g., Expensify Sage, Salesforce )
- PSA technical system support
- Collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Jira, Confluence, Sharepoint)
- Security and endpoint management platforms
Responsibilities include:
- System configuration, integrations, permission structures, and security controls
- Partnering with functional owners on enhancements and technical feasibility
- Managing platform upgrades, releases, and vendor support cases
- Ensuring systems are well-documented, scalable, and secure
Security, Compliance & Risk Management
- Partner with MSP and leadership to maintain strong security hygiene across systems and devices.
- Ensure appropriate access controls, device management, and data protection practices are in place.
- Support audit preparation and compliance requirements as needed (e.g., ISO)
- Identify and mitigate IT, security, and operational risks.
Strategy, Planning & Leadership
- Assess current IT landscape and recommend pragmatic improvements aligned to business needs.
- Develop a near-term IT roadmap focused on stability, scalability, and cost effectiveness.
- Provide clear, executive-level communication on risks, priorities, and trade-offs.
- Support leadership decisions related to technology investments and platform choices.
Required Experience & Skills
Must-Have
- 8+ years of IT experience, including hands-on systems administration or IT management
- Proven experience managing and holding MSPs accountable
- Strong technical knowledge of modern SaaS environments and cloud-based IT infrastructure
- Experience supporting a growing, distributed workforce
- Ability to operate comfortably at both strategic and tactical levels
- Clear communicator who can translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
Nice-to-Have
- Experience in professional services, SaaS, or high-growth environments
- Prior interim, consulting, or transformation roles
- Exposure to SOC 2, ISO, or similar compliance frameworks
- Experience partnering closely with People/HR and Finance teams
