The IBM i Systems Engineer is responsible for leading the successful implementation of customer projects on IBM i Power platforms. This role ensures that all customer requirements are clearly understood and executed according to defined timelines and delivery objectives.

Acts as the technical subject matter expert across the Delivery team to provide clear, accurate updates to Project Managers and key stakeholders. They also work in partnership with Service Delivery Managers and support teams to ensure seamless project handoffs into live production environments. This includes providing complete and accurate technical documentation to support a smooth and efficient transition into service.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the end-to-end implementation of customer projects on IBM i Power platforms — ensuring technical accuracy, timely delivery, and customer satisfaction. This may require working outside of regular business hours.
  • Perform physical onsite hardware installations of IBM Power Servers (travel required).
  • Execute system migrations using various methods (Tape, VTL, software replication, storage replication).
  • Collaborate with technical subject matter experts and project managers to translate requirements into clear, actionable solutions.
  • Ensure project documentation is accurate and handed off seamlessly into production.
  • Provide subject matter expert level advice to Technical Pre-Sales for any prospective solutions that are being designed\scoped.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule (approximately 1 out of every 8 days).
  • Provide efficient and effective support to both internal and external customers. This includes resolving support issues that cannot be handled by lower-tier support staff and being available to attend customer sites as required. 

What We Are Looking For:

  • Deep expertise with IBM Power hardware infrastructure and IBM i OS (V5R4 – V7R6).
  • Experience with:
  • LPAR/HMC configuration
  • SAN/storage integration & PowerHA
  • Mimix, QuickEDD, or similar replication tools
  • VTLs, backups, and disaster recovery
  • Proficiency in performance analysis, capacity planning, CL programming, and IBM i automation.
  • Strong project documentation and communication skills — able to explain technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-pressure, deadline-driven environments.
  • Logical replication & backup/restore tools
  • IBM i patching, upgrades, PTF management
  • IBM i security best practices
  • SQL, scripting, and systems integration
  • This role is remote-based in the U.S. with regular travel for onsite hardware installs and customer implementations.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation approximately 1 in every 8 days to support critical project and customer needs.
