Role overview

The VMware Engineer will manage and optimize converged infrastructure, ensuring secure, reliable, and high-performing virtualized environments across on-premises and cloud platforms. This position is hands-on and customer-focused, supporting mission-critical Department of Defense systems.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage and deploy hardware profiles and firmware upgrades for Cisco UCS B2xx blades and associated UCS shelves and components.
  • Install, configure, patch, and maintain VMware hypervisors, vCenter, and related cloud and virtualization infrastructure.
  • Perform system hardening and vulnerability remediation; partner with IA/C&A teams on security scans, compliance audits, and STIG application for VMware and server platforms.
  • Troubleshoot VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM), perform upgrades, and apply STIGs to virtual appliances to support disaster recovery objectives.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues in preproduction and production environments, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.

Automation and operations

  • Develop and maintain automation scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to streamline deployment, configuration management, and routine operations.
  • Monitor performance and capacity across local and remote environments, tuning configurations to improve reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with network, storage, and security teams to design, test, and implement integrated cloud-based and on-premises solutions.

Storage, documentation, and support

  • Administer SAN storage infrastructure, perform daily maintenance, and ensure data integrity, backup, and recoverability.
  • Create and maintain lifecycle documentation, including configurations, patch records, architecture diagrams, and RMF artifacts to support audits and accreditation.
  • Support DoD RMF compliance, provide Tier III escalation support for infrastructure incidents, and participate in after-hours or on-call rotation as required for mission support.

Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Information Systems.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of IT experience managing hybrid software, web, and hardware systems across the full lifecycle—from design through maintenance.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating network operating systems, application software, and hardware throughout system engineering processes.
  • At least one (1) year of hands-on technical experience in system engineering or administration within a cloud environment.

Mandatory Certifications:

Must possess one of the following baseline certifications:

  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA CASP
  • CISSP

In addition, the candidate must hold one (1) of the following, or an equivalent certification:

  • IEEE CS Software Development Associate Engineer Certification
  • Microsoft Role-Based Certification (e.g., MCAD, MCDBA)
  • Red Hat Certified Professional (RHCP)
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
  • VMware Certified Technical Associate – Data Center Virtualization
  • Citrix Certified Administrator
  • Cloud certification (e.g., AWS Architect, Developer, or SysOps Associate)
  • Agile Developer or Certified Scrum Developer

Candidate must also meet DoD 8570 requirements and possess an Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II or higher certification.

Security Clearance Requirements:

Must be a U.S. citizen with an active Secret security clearance; Top Secret eligibility is preferred.
