Health Program Lead

AI overview

Lead the development of a healthcare data vertical, advocating with government stakeholders and designing scalable data workflows to strengthen India's public health ecosystem.

About Karya:

Why was Karya on the cover of the Time Magazine , highlighted by Satya Nadella , and chosen by Google as its partner for Project Vaani

In part, because Karya is on a mission to provide AI enabled earning and learning opportunities to economically underserved communities, thereby building a pathway out of poverty for them. Karya achieves this while also delivering high quality, timely, and price competitive data to its clients.

Karya’s workers make at least 20 times the Indian minimum wage and through our one-of-a-kind digital work platform, we have delivered over 40 million digital tasks and are poised to positively impact over 100 thousand workers by the end of the year. In the coming years, our goal is to rapidly scale our impact by bringing economic opportunities to millions of underserved users in India.

About the Role

Karya is seeking an experienced Health Program Lead to build and lead our healthcare data vertical from the ground up. This role sits at the intersection of public health, AI, and digital work, driving the design, execution, and advocacy of projects that source high-quality healthcare datasets from across India.

The ideal candidate combines healthcare domain expertise with hands-on experience in public health implementation and multi-level government engagement. You will advocate with government stakeholders, design scalable data workflows grounded in India’s health realities, and manage large-scale projects involving frontline and specialist health workers.
If you’re passionate about using technology and data to strengthen India’s public health ecosystem — and want to build a practice that uplifts both workers and patients — we’d love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead Health Program Development

  • Build Karya’s Healthcare Practice from the ground up, defining its vision, roadmap, and team structure.
  • Identify high-impact healthcare data opportunities aligned with Karya’s mission and client needs.

2. Government & Institutional Advocacy

  • Represent Karya with central, state, and district administrations, public health missions, and research bodies.
  • Lead grant and proposal development for large-scale health data projects.

3. Healthcare Workflow & Dataset Design

  • Apply healthcare domain expertise to design data annotation and collection workflows for diverse healthcare use cases (clinical conversations, health record annotation, diagnostics, etc.).
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure healthcare datasets meet scientific and ethical standards

4. Field & Workforce Engagement

  • Mobilize, onboard, and train a wide range of healthcare workers — from rural ASHAs to urban clinicians and specialists — to participate in data collection and annotation projects.
  • Leads the process of acquiring and maintaining certifications, approvals, and institutional registrations required for healthcare data projects (such as DSIR, or IRB/ethics clearances), ensuring all programs meet national compliance standards.
  • Oversee end-to-end project delivery for high priority healthcare projects, from scoping and planning to execution and evaluation

Ideal Candidate

1. Experience

  • 6-8 years of experience in public health, health systems strengthening, or digital health program implementation.
  • Prior experience working with or within National Health Mission, state health departments, or development partners such as the WHO.
  • Exposure to AI-driven or digital health solutions — e.g., using technology for health data capture, telemedicine, or decision-support tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate health policy objectives into actionable, scalable field programs.

2. Education

  • A professional qualification in medicine, dentistry, public health, or health management (MBBS, BDS, MPH, MBA – Health Management, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Formal training in digital health, health systems, or implementation research is a strong plus.

3. Core Competencies

  • Strategic Advocacy: Skilled at engaging senior bureaucrats, public-sector health leaders, and donors to secure buy-in for new health data initiatives.
  • Program Leadership: Able to design, operationalize, and monitor large-scale health programs spanning multiple states and partners.
  • Digital Health Fluency: Understands the intersection of healthcare delivery and emerging technologies such as AI and data annotation; comfortable collaborating with engineers and data scientists to design clinically sound workflows.
  • Stakeholder & Field Engagement: Experienced in training and mobilizing diverse cadres — from ASHA and ANM workers to specialists and public health officers.

Location

100% remote, with travel required on a project-specific basis.

At Karya, we are on a mission to bring AI-based earning and learning opportunities to low-income communities. The AI revolution has created a massive amount of digital work surrounding data generation, labelling, and enrichment. From building multimodal Indic language datasets and human-in-the-loop tasks to mitigating bias and culturally-sensitive LLM evaluations, Karya’s workers in rural India enable cutting-edge, inclusive AI innovations.      We have also built a one-of-a-kind digital work platform that divides AI-data tasks into microtasks and distributes them to individuals in need of supplementary income. So far, our platform has been used to distribute 40 million+ tasks to 40,000+ people in India. Our platform and model allows us to provide our workers some of the highest wages in the global data market - nearly 20 times the Indian minimum wage.      We were on the cover of the Time Magazine and Bloomberg last year, and Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella recently highlighted our work in his keynote. Karya has been supported by organisations like Microsoft, Google, Gates Foundation, ACT Grants, Fast Forward, 100X Accelerator, DRK Foundation, Mulago, Echoing Green, The/Nudge Institute among others.
