Head of People Partnering
TLDR
Lead the People Partnering team at Montu, managing complex Employment Relations matters and setting the direction for partnering support across the business.
The Head of People Partnering leads our team of People Partners aligned to business areas across Montu, and personally takes on the most complex, sensitive, and executive-level Employment Relations matters that arise. You'll be accountable for the standard of partnering support delivered to managers and senior leaders, and you'll take hands-on accountability for the matters that need them.
This isn't a hands-off leadership role. You'll set the operating direction for the partnering function, lift manager capability across the business, and personally run the ER work that needs senior judgement: investigations, executive exits, deeds of release, Fair Work proceedings, settlement decisions. ELT exposure is real and constant. So is the ambiguity that comes with scale.
You'll report to the GM People and work closely with the broader People team and ELT.
What you'll own
- Strategy and operating direction for the People Partnering function
- Standard of partnering support delivered across all business areas
- Personal lead on complex, sensitive, and executive-level ER matters: investigations, executive exits, deeds of release, Fair Work proceedings
- Determinations on legal risk, settlement parameters, and external counsel engagement on matters under your ownership
- Manager capability uplift through the partnering team and direct senior engagement
- Performance management cycles, calibration, talent reviews, and lifecycle delivery
- Engagement strategy, listening cycles, and action planning at business area level
- Practical, considered AI adoption across the partnering team
- Development and performance of the People Partner team
What we're looking for
- 10+ years in senior HR roles spanning generalist or business partnering and substantive ER ownership
- 3+ years leading People Partner or HR Business Partner teams
- Demonstrated experience personally managing complex, executive-level ER matters under Australian employment law
- Sound judgement on legal risk, settlement decisions, and when to engage external counsel
- Track record of building manager capability at scale, not just policy delivery
- Comfort working at ELT level: writes well, briefs cleanly, holds a position when challenged
- Commercial mindset: balances people fairness with business sustainability
- Genuine curiosity about AI and HR technology, with a considered view on adoption
- Bachelor's degree in HR or related field; postgraduate qualification preferred but not essential
Why this role
- Genuine seat at the table, not adjacent to it
- Scope and complexity that's rare outside ASX-listed enterprise
- Hands-on ER work without the team management overhead
- Pragmatic culture that backs people who deliver and think commercially
- Permanent, full-time, work from home
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Master's degree preferred
Proven experience with 10+ years in senior HR generalist or business partnering roles, preferably in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
3+ years leading People Partner or HR Business Partner teams
Strong understanding of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulations (Australian context)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
Demonstrated leadership ability, including experience managing and developing high-performing HR teams
Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business objectives into actionable people initiatives
Analytical mindset with the ability to leverage data to drive decision-making and measure the effectiveness of partnering programs
Confident operator with senior business leaders, including ability to challenge constructively and hold a position when needed
