Job Profile

The Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for safely handling, processing, packaging, and tracking hazardous waste for shipment, treatment, and disposal across LGC facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage the Hazardous Waste Program

  • Test, collect, characterize, classify, and sort chemical hazardous waste and other hazardous materials from the laboratory process
  • Track inventories of hazardous chemical waste and other hazardous materials on-site
  • Bulk or lab pack hazardous materials to prepare for removal from site
  • Coordinate the removal of hazardous waste from site including obtaining quotations from third party vendors, generating purchase requisitions, coordinating the physical removal, and updating on-site inventory
  • Maintain required stock of supplies required for hazardous chemical waste collection and disposal
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the hazardous waste rooms following 5S practices
  • Monitor site-wide adherence to SOPs regarding hazardous waste management and take action on gaps by providing training and/or escalation
  • Ensure current provincial and federal regulations, laws, and amendments governing hazardous wastes and materials are followed, including O. Reg. 347
  • Ensure to comply with prescribed safety procedures or federal laws regulating hazardous waste disposal methods
  • Operate machines or equipment to move, package, store, or transport hazardous waste materials
  • Perform cleaning and maintenance of flammable storage cabinets, including the preparation and application of appropriate cleaning solutions for cabinet ventilation components, to ensure safe storage conditions and compliance with fire safety protocols
  • Be responsible for registering new waste with Ministry of Environment
  • Ensure hazardous waste materials are removed from site following regulatory requirements and internal timelines
  • Maintain required documentation and certificates related to the disposal and destruction of hazardous waste, including management of the site RPRA account
  • Generate reports related to the disposal of hazardous waste including quantities, waste classifications and costs

Support Environmental Health and Safety Programs

  • Maintain stock and regular inspection of specialty chemical spill kits for use in the laboratory or hazardous waste rooms
  • Calibrate and maintain calibration records of handheld gas monitoring devices for use in the laboratory
  • Inspect and maintain stock of first aid kits and the first aid room
  • Attend training and professional development activities, including necessary certification

Work Safely

  • Understand and anticipate possible safety issues by taking all necessary precautions prior to initiation of experiments
  • Abide by health and safety guidelines prescribed by governing bodies and the TRC Environmental Health and Safety Committee
  • General housekeeping of laboratory and workstation
  • A University degree in Chemistry, environmental science/engineering, waste management, or toxicology required
  • One to two years' experience working as a hazardous waste technician
  • Must have a good understanding of the safety procedures, federal and provincial laws regulating hazardous waste disposal

Work Conditions

  • Work Setting: Manufacturing setting – laboratory and warehouse exposure
  • Distinctive Safety Conditions: The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Steel-toe shoes, eye protection, laboratory coat, at times a respirator

The typical pay range for this role is:

Minimum: CAD $55,000/ Yearly 

Maximum: CAD $65,000/ Yearly

This range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for the position. The actual base salary will depend on several factors such as: experience, skills, and location.
