The Consumer Products team at OpenAI builds and scales products that bring advanced AI capabilities directly to people around the world. We work across hardware, software, design, and research to create intuitive, reliable, and responsible consumer experiences powered by cutting-edge models. Our work spans early exploration through global deployment, with a focus on building products that are useful, trustworthy, and accessible at scale.
We’re looking for a Hardware Regulatory & Compliance Engineer to lead global certification and regulatory efforts for new hardware products—from early prototypes through worldwide deployment. In this role, you’ll work closely with hardware, software, operations, and research teams to ensure our products meet regulatory requirements across regions while enabling fast iteration and long-term scalability.
You’ll own the end-to-end compliance strategy, partner with external labs and regulatory bodies, and help build internal processes and testing capabilities that scale with our ambitions.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 4 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
Engage with regulatory bodies to manage global certification processes across regions and product lines.
Consolidate worldwide regulatory requirements into test plans and coordinate with third-party labs to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Prepare and submit FCC KDB, ISED, and other regulatory inquiries to obtain device-specific guidance.
Support worldwide certification activities from early development through production release.
Gather and maintain global hardware marking, user manual, and in-box documentation requirements.
Collaborate closely with engineering, operations, and software teams to ensure products meet all applicable regulatory standards.
Review design specifications and provide technical regulatory input to system and hardware teams.
Prepare and manage all required regulatory filings and certification documentation.
Partner with third-party test labs for pre-compliance validation and formal certification testing.
Develop and scale in-house testing capabilities to support compliance, risk reduction, and faster iteration.
Experience managing global hardware regulatory certifications (e.g., FCC, ISED, CE, UKCA, MIC).
Strong understanding of RF, EMC, safety, and environmental compliance requirements.
Hands-on experience working with third-party test labs and regulatory agencies.
The ability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into actionable engineering guidance.
Experience collaborating cross-functionally with hardware, software, manufacturing, and operations teams.
Comfort working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where processes are still being built.
Experience supporting consumer or emerging hardware products from prototype through mass production.
Familiarity with pre-compliance testing and building internal lab capabilities.
Background working with complex systems that combine hardware, firmware, and cloud services.
Experience scaling compliance processes across multiple products or regions.
