We believe that by circulating all forms of value, not just physical things and money, we can create opportunities for anyone to realize their dreams and contribute to society and the people around them. Mercari aims to use technology to connect people all over the world and create a world where anyone can unleash their potential. Work Responsibilities

  • Strategic Advisory & Insight Discovery: Proactively identify trends and anomalies in complex datasets. Translate these findings into high-impact recommendations for senior stakeholders, moving beyond reporting to actively shaping the growth.
  • End-to-End Project Ownership: Independently manage the full analytics lifecycle—from defining the business problem and gathering requirements to data cleaning, modeling, and final delivery.
  • Advanced Data Modeling & Architecture: Design, build, and maintain sophisticated data models and automated dashboards that serve as single sources of truth for the organization.
  • Stakeholder Partnership: Act as the primary point of contact for cross-functional teams (Product, Marketing, Ops). Distill technical complexities into clear, actionable narratives for non-technical audiences.
  • Process Automation & Optimization: Identify and automate repetitive data tasks using SQL and Python etc. Champion best practices for data governance, documentation, and code efficiency.

Unique Challenges

  • Cross-Domain Adaptability: Navigate and integrate complex data streams across diverse business functions such as shipping logistics, payment processing, product development, and marketing. This role requires the flexibility and curiosity to continuously master new operational domains and synthesize overarching business insights.
  • Autonomy and Bias for Action: Operate independently within a fast-paced, highly ambiguous environment. You will be expected to proactively identify critical business problems, independently design analytical frameworks, and execute data-driven solutions with minimal oversight or predefined project scoping.
  • Strategic Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner effectively with stakeholders across Product, Marketing, Operations, and Finance, often reconciling competing priorities and disparate data sources. This requires the ability to distill complex analytics into accessible narratives and influence strategic, cross-departmental decision-making without relying on direct organizational authority.

Qualifications

  • Required Experience/Skills
    • Strong interest in growth, marketing, and direct business impact, with a willingness to explicitly own business impact.
    • Proven experience applying machine learning to real, user-facing decisions and production environments.
    • Proficiency in Python and SQL
    • Experience with large-scale data processing tools (e.g., BigQuery, or equivalent)
    • Solid understanding of statistics, experimental design, and causal reasoning
  • Preferred Experience/Skills
    • Prior work experience in a C2C marketplace or in a similar domain.
    • Experience with ML frameworks(e.g., scikit-learn, XGBoost, LightGBM, TensorFlow, or PyTorch)
    • Familiarity with ML deployment and monitoring in production systems
    • Experience with both RDBMS and NoSQL databases, as well as exposure to backend engineering practices (e.g., microservices, Go, gRPC) and cloud platforms.
  • Language
    • Japanese: Preferred
    • English: Required
