As a Global Trade Compliance Specialist, you’ll serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner across our global operations — supporting business units, engineering teams, and program managers to navigate complex regulatory frameworks. You will implement and maintain Shield AI’s global trade compliance program, with a focus on Australian, U.S., and allied nation export controls.
What you'll do:
Provide expert guidance on export and import requirements under Australian, U.S., and international trade control laws (including ITAR, EAR, and Australian Defence Export Controls).
Manage export and import authorizations, including license applications, permit tracking, and recordkeeping.
Review technology transfers, technical data, and project scopes to determine export control jurisdiction and classification.
Partner with engineering, supply chain, legal, and program management to integrate trade compliance into design, production, and delivery processes.
Conduct trade compliance risk assessments, internal audits, and investigations; support remediation and continuous improvement.
Deliver training and awareness programs to internal teams on export control obligations and compliance best practices.
Serve as liaison with government agencies, customers, suppliers, and external compliance service providers.
Monitor regulatory and policy developments across key jurisdictions and provide actionable guidance to business leadership.
Support the development and execution of Shield AI’s global trade compliance policies, procedures, and control frameworks.
DISP Compliance & Governance
Assist in implementing and maintaining the Shield AI DISP-aligned Security Management System.
Support preparation of documentation for audits, assurance activities, and Defence engagement.
Support internal reviews and risk assessments against DISP requirements and Defence security guidance.
Help prepare security reports, briefings, and policy updates for senior management related to DISP compliance.
Collaborate with IT/cyber teams to document compliance evidence and ensure policies align with DISP expectations.
Record security incidents, near misses, and breaches in accordance with Defence and internal reporting requirements.
Support the AU Chief Security Officer and US-based Global Head of Security in coordinating incident responses and preparing post-incident reports for DISP reporting.
Required qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Law, Business, International Trade, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in trade compliance, customs, or export control within aerospace, defense, or advanced technology industries.
Strong working knowledge of Australian export control regulations, and familiarity with U.S. ITAR/EAR frameworks.
Demonstrated experience managing trade authorizations, classifying goods and technologies, and developing compliance programs.
Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Australian citizenship and eligibility to obtain a Baseline Defence Security Clearance.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience liaising with Australian Government departments (e.g. Defence, DFAT, or Home Affairs)
Experience supporting programs involving defense technologies, dual-use items, or autonomous systems.
Exposure to compliance operations across multiple jurisdictions (Australia, U.S., EU, APAC).
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Export Specialist, Certified Customs Specialist, or equivalent).
