Job Summary

Under the direction of the Service Center Manager, the Garnishment Specialist ensures the accurate and timely processing of all involuntary deductions from employee pay, including child support, tax levies, student loans, creditor garnishments, and bankruptcy orders. This role serves as the primary liaison between the company, legal entities, government agencies, and employees to ensure full compliance with federal and state regulations. Main tasks include the review and set up of garnishments, work outstanding checks, answer sheets and communication with clients. Actions support Nextep’s elevate and enrich culture.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and analyze legal documents (writs, levies, and orders) to determine the validity, priority, and required withholding amounts.
  • Works all cases timely and ensures accurate case completion while ensuring resolution to customer inquiries with a sense of urgency while providing accurate information in a friendly and professional manner. 
  • Act as the point of contact for Payroll team, employees, custodial parents, attorneys, and agencies regarding garnishment statuses, balances, and procedures. 
  • Set up and maintain garnishment records in the payroll system, ensuring that start dates, end dates, and payment limits are accurately captured.
  • Monitor and apply federal and state-specific laws (such as Title III of the Consumer Credit Protection Act) regarding maximum withholding limits and disposable earnings calculations.
  • Reconcile garnishment accounts to ensure that the amounts deducted from payroll match the payments remitted to agencies or creditors.
  • Promptly notify agencies when a garnished employee leaves the company to stop the order and fulfill final reporting requirements.
  • Generate and file "Employer Answers" or interrogatories to courts to confirm an employee's status and the company’s intent to comply.
  • Ensure proper scanning and storing of all garnishment notices in the Nextep system. 

Requirements

Education: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of garnishment experience, required
  • 1-3 years of customer service experience, required
  • Strong time management skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, and superior organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
