Fullstack Engineer

TLDR

Collaborate in small, autonomous project teams to leverage generative AI and Elixir/Phoenix, optimizing software solutions with a strong user-centric focus.

🌎 Hire Location (we can only hire for this role in the following countries): United Kingdom | Ireland | The Netherlands

Are you ready for an incredible adventure? We're on the lookout for a highly skilled and experienced software engineer. If you’re excited to unlock the full potential of our platform, leveraging the power of Generative AI and Elixir/Phoenix alongside some brilliant engineers - this could be the role for you, we are eager to have more people who want to stay on the bleeding edge of the technology!

At Workera, we want each one of us to be a product engineer, an empowered engineer who cares about the users, and that will make for a happy engineer. How do achieve that? We set up small project teams (2-3 people) deep-diving a couple of weeks or months to address a certain problem space. The project team has the autonomy to solve it in the way they want - but also the responsibility to own every aspect of the feature: scoping the problem and solution, prototyping, testing/dogfooding, rollout, and handling user feedback. You work closely with our product manager and product designer in doing so, as well as other (non-tech) colleagues.

⚒️ We hope you have:

This role is perfect for those who thrive in an environment where they can take the wheel and drive. You know how to prioritize tasks even when there seem to be a million things on your plate. You've built software systems that scaled up, and you strike a balance between pragmatism and future-proofing your solutions.

These are the things we'd like to see in you:

  • 5+ years of experience in fullstack software development, preferably in a SaaS or startup environment, with particular focus on the backend.
  • Practical experience with building scalable systems, top to bottom. Ideally, with Elixir/Phoenix/PostgreSQL, integrating with 3rd party APIs
  • Practical day-to-day experience using AI tools for enhancing personal productivity (such as Claude Code) - bonus if you've already developed user-facing features that use GenAI under the hood (we'd love to hear about those!)
  • A proven record of delivering a project that involves complex technical decision-making on the data layer (database modeling, optimizations, or refactoring, on a large scale), ensuring high performance at peak load times.
  • Strong user / customer orientation, understanding and optimizing user flows
  • Ability and willingness to contribute also on the frontend (we use mainly Phoenix + React).
  • Experience with GitHub and Slack for collaboration
  • 2+ years of experience working with a fully remote team
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, keep stakeholders and teammates up to date
  • Interest in emerging GenAI technologies and willingness to prototype with them, to discover the cutting edge of what's possible
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

The details: remote work & tech stack

You should be located in the UK, Ireland, or the Netherlands. You are free to choose working hours that suit you best, as long as there is an overlap with your team for most of the day.

Our stack primarily consists of Elixir + PostgreSQL on the backend and Phoenix on the frontend (with some pockets of React). We monitor performance using Sentry, and our platform is hosted on AWS, running on Docker containers defined in Terraform. Our platform is AI-native, and we make extensive use of LLMs in our application. Our code lives on GitHub - in fact, GitHub, Slack and Linear is where most of the collaboration happens (almost no emails get sent around). We practice using Loom to demo our work. That's the gist of it - we can dive into other technologies used when we get to know each other.
