Freelance: Developer, Immersive & Location Based Experiences

This is a freelance position with our New York team. While local candidates are preferred, we are open to considering remote applications from within the U.S. who can work standard Eastern Time business hours.
Project durations vary; however, candidates must be available to start by mid-April 2026 and possess valid US work authorization.
We are looking for a versatile Freelance Software Developer to join us in the technical execution of high-fidelity products and projects for global IP and brand clients. Working primarily within C++ and Unreal Engine, you will take ownership of your deliverables across a wide range of hardware and cutting-edge platforms.
This role is for a developer who can move fluidly from R&D to production-ready deployment, delivering robust code while collaborating effectively with both technical teams and creative leadership.
What you’ll do
Develop and optimize code across multiple platforms and languages. We’re looking for a versatile engineer who thrives on technical variety and can adapt to different levels of abstraction
Analyze complex system requirements to identify potential technical bottlenecks and design innovative, scalable solutions before implementation begins
Own the end-to-end quality of your code by implementing rigorous testing suites, performing deep-dive debugging, and profiling applications to ensure peak performance
Create and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation for technical designs, API contracts, and codebase changes to ensure long-term maintainability
Engage in active peer reviews of technical designs and code contributions, providing constructive feedback to maintain high standards of quality and consistency across the team
Requirements
Deep working knowledge of C++ and Unreal Engine. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable navigating the engine’s architecture and can be productive from day one
Hands-on experience developing for a variety of hardware platforms and their associated SDKs, with the ability to adapt code to different hardware constraints
Proven ability to rapidly adopt and implement solutions using alternative tools, languages, and environments as project needs shift
Experience integrating third-party online services and open-source tools into complex existing codebases
Deep understanding of 3D mathematics and physics simulation
Proficiency in code review processes and a disciplined approach to testing, profiling, and debugging
Ability to document complex designs and system architectures clearly for other engineers
Skilled at translating technical concepts, risks, and timelines into actionable information for non-technical stakeholders (Producers/Creative Directors)
A positive attitude towards learning and sharing. Deadline-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment
You might also have
Prior experience with Unity or other real-time engines, providing a broad perspective on different development ecosystems
Familiarity with languages like Python or PowerShell to streamline workflows or build internal tools
Experience developing for public-facing activations or live installations where reliability and rock-solid performance are critical
A proven ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations, such as live event troubleshooting
Understanding of VFX pipelines and technical art workflows to bridge the gap between engineering and creative teams
New York Employees Pay Range: $500 - $800 per day.
The posted range describes the minimum to maximum range for this job description in the state of New York. The range is posted in accordance with the New York Pay Transparency Bill. The range for this same position may be lower or higher in markets outside of New York City. Pay is dependent on the applicant's relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
