Founding Full-Stack Engineer (AU/NZ)

AI overview

As the first employee, you'll shape our technical direction by building AI tools and defining product features in a dynamic startup environment.

🪩 About Gather

Gather is an events app changing how events are organized and discovered across Australia and Aotearoa, supporting everything from house parties to multi-day music festivals. We’re a team of passionate artist-engineers building a modern replacement for Facebook Events: party invites, effortless ticketing, and AI-powered discovery.

🔎 Who we're looking for

Our ideal candidate is a highly experienced engineer who combines deep technical expertise with a passion for building great products. You have a proven track record shipping high-quality software frequently and reliably, with a keen eye for user experience and a meticulous attention to detail. You’re extremely pragmatic, always looking for the quickest way to ship a credible “version zero” to production.

We’re an AI-forward company. Ideally you’ve already been experimenting with agent-style coding workflows, e.g. orchestrating swarms of multiple instances of Claude Code (and similar tools) to work on several problems at once. Overall we’re looking for an experienced developer who can see what’s on the horizon with AI-powered workflows and their impact across all aspects of software, and who takes a pragmatic, lean-in approach.

💼 About the role

As our first employee, you'll work directly with our two founders building features like our AI discovery engine and festival organiser tools. You’ll be deeply involved in defining our technical direction and contributing significantly to our early growth and culture. Ideally you’ll be able to jump in as needed to solve urgent technical challenges, whether individually or by supporting team members.

💻 Software engineering

Gather is built on a modern TypeScript stack. We’re looking for someone with several years of TS experience who will hit the ground running. Our current stack consists of:

  • Frontend: Next.js, Tailwind, shadcn, React Query

  • Database/Backend: PlanetScale (SQL), Drizzle, tRPC

  • Ticketing API: Cloudflare Workers & Durable Objects

  • Upcoming: React Native

🔥 Bonus skills

  • Experience with prompt engineering, RAG, and agent patterns

  • You love music and events and actively seek what's happening in your city

  • You enjoy creating things - whether that’s music, crafts, poems, whatever

💖 Our culture

  • Ownership: We take initiative, even when it is "not our job." As a startup, we all wear lots of hats.

  • Product centric: We care deeply about our product and users and always keep their needs top of mind.

  • Full force: We rise to the challenge of putting our full energy into what we are working on, and tackle issues as soon as they arise.

  • Growth mindset: We look to magnify our strengths, take chances, and always learn from our mistakes.

  • Fun: We don’t take ourselves too seriously and love to goof around a bit. Disrupting the events industry is a lot of work, so we may as well have fun while we’re doing it.

💁🏼 Why join Gather?

  • A flexible, remote/hybrid work environment

  • Competitive salary (AUD/NZD $130k–180k depending on location & experience) + equity

  • You’ll be part of a fast-paced startup that already has paying customers

  • Modern stack with top-tier developers

  • Working alongside a team of artists who are committed to making the events industry better for everyone

  • A seat at the table for key decisions

  • The ability to grow into a leadership role as we scale

We’re really looking forward to finding the right person for this role. If you think it might be you, we’d love to chat.
