Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist – 0.6 FTE

Join a specialist forensic mental health service providing strategic leadership, expert psychiatric oversight, and clinical care. You will act as Responsible Clinician (RC) under the Mental Health Act, delivering high-quality, recovery-focused care to individuals involved with the criminal justice system.

You will have RC responsibility for male service users on medium secure wards, with support from a non-consultant grade doctor and secretarial assistance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure effective functioning of the Care Programme Approach (CPA) for patients

  • Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure good patient care and throughput

  • Escalate concerns regarding medical staff to Medical or Regional Directors as needed

  • Provide clinical leadership and support team-building

  • Contribute to training, education, and development of staff, particularly medical staff

  • Supervise and appraise medical staff as required

  • Represent the medical voice in clinical governance meetings

  • Ensure effective delivery of quality medical services

  • Guide safe and appropriate implementation of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act

  • Liaise with external agencies and stakeholders

  • Support compliance with regulatory standards such as CQC/HIW


Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise

  • MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists

  • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status

  • Specialist Register entry for Forensic Psychiatry highly desirable

  • Experience assessing and managing patients in forensic psychiatric settings

  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care
