Fluidics Engineering Intern, Spatial

About the Role:

We are looking for a motivated engineering intern to join our Fluidics Engineering group. This team leverages a deep understanding of fluidics and other mass transport phenomena to engineer new capabilities and increase performance for our 10x single-cell and spatial technologies.

In this role, you will focus on exploring and developing a new capability for spatial assay sample handling and multiplexing. You will work within a cross-functional R&D environment, taking ownership of a specific technical challenge from the brainstorming phase through experimental validation. This is a hands-on role perfect for a graduate student looking to apply advanced engineering principles to real-world biotechnology development problems.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Design & Innovation: Brainstorm and design novel methods to partition and load microliter-scale volumes of single-cell suspensions onto microscope slides.
  • Prototyping: Utilize rapid prototyping techniques (including 3D printing) to build functional prototypes for testing.
  • Experiments: Design and execute rigorous experiments to validate concepts, primarily using microscopy-based tools image analysis..
  • Data Analysis: Collect, process, and analyze experimental data to derive actionable conclusions and determine necessary design iterations.
  • Communication: Synthesize findings and present results, technical challenges, and proposed next steps to the Fluidics engineering team.

To Be Successful, You Will Need:

  • Current enrollment in a graduate program (MS or PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with microfluidics is a plus.
  • General lab experience: Previous training in how to use standard equipment (e.g., pipettes) and work safely in a lab.
  • Microscopy & Imaging: Familiarity with optical microscopy and image analysis software (e.g., ImageJ, Fiji).
  • Fabrication: Hands-on experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping, or microfabrication techniques.
  • Programming: Proficiency in Python for data analysis or scripting.
  • Fluidics: A strong grasp of fluid dynamics and mass transport phenomena.
  • Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to design experiments independently and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to distill complex information for presenting to interdisciplinary audiences.
  • Mission-first: A "we before me" attitude with a proven ability to work effectively on teams to solve complex problems.
