The Mechanical Field Engineer (FE) is primarily responsible for supporting design, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of critical mechanical systems across our data center portfolio.  This role will be the centralized mechanical technical subject matter expert for all site/campus acting as a resident engineer, resource for the Director of Campus/Site Operations (DSO), Critical Facility Manager (CFM), Critical Engineering Technicians (CETs), and any third-party vendors. This role involves hands-on field engineering, root cause analysis, vendor oversight, project execution, and cross functional collaboration to ensure the highest levels of reliability, safety, efficiency, and uptime for all mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data centers.  The ideal candidate brings deep technical engineering and troubleshooting expertise in mechanical systems (air-cooled chillers, CRAHs, water treatment, liquid-cooling loops, etc.) supporting mission critical facilities.

The FE engineer may direct, train, and support site operations during construction, commissioning and production operation by providing hands-on mechanical equipment troubleshooting, RFI input, and corrective maintenance. Implementation and execution of site/equipment-specific training exercises is also expected.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead or support data center mechanical system design efforts, integrating new technologies while balancing cost, efficiency, speed to delivery, and sustainability
  • Research, design, and develop cooling technologies and mechanical system improvements to enhance reliability, efficiency, and speed-to-market
  • Provide mechanical subject matter expertise on cooling strategies, system topology, and infrastructure performance
  • Perform design and equipment submittal reviews for new data centers and site upgrades
  • Support standardization of mechanical designs across regions and promote consistency, reliability, and best practices
  • Serve as an onsite technical resource of mechanical infrastructure systems and equipment, with an emphasis on safe practical field operation
  • Provide Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QAQC) oversight of construction projects & maintenance activity within operations space
  • Plan resource, author or approve work procedures to cover troubleshooting, repair, retrofit, and maintenance activities, with an emphasis on assessing & mitigating personnel and critical systems and operational risk
  • This role may include up to 25% travel to other data centers, factory witness testing, and specialty technical schools

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of critical cooling and mechanical equipment such as AHUs, CRAH units, chillers, water treatment systems, pumps, and associated controls
  • Ensure proper preventive maintenance, inspections, and performance assessments to uphold high uptime standards
  • Perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis (RCA), and implement corrective actions for mechanical system incidents and failures
  • Act as resident engineer during data center construction and retrofits, providing onsite technical direction and validating installation quality
  • Manage concurrent engineering projects, ensuring they meet scope, timelines, safety expectations, and design intent
  • Support conceptual design for infrastructure upgrades and modernization initiatives
  • Coordinate spare parts planning, procurement, and inventory management for mechanical assets
  • Collaborate with civil, structural, electrical, controls, IT, and operations teams to deliver holistic solutions optimized for performance and scalability
  • Work closely with site selection, construction, and design teams during planning and execution phases
  • Assist site operations teams in maintaining the site-specific preventive maintenance and work order program under guidance from the Availability and Maintenance team
  • Using knowledge of the systems in place, coupled with performance data collected, evaluate the performance of systems, and suggest cost-effective improvements to service and operating efficiency
  • Ensure the availability of an adequate inventory of tools and other supplies to operate the building
  • Protect and improve the value of our assets and ensure that building machinery and systems meet or exceed their expected life
  • Provide feedback on global maintenance strategies and global system design improvements to reliability and design engineering groups
  • Communicate lessons learned and best practices across the portfolio with other operational leaders
  • Review design drawings for accuracy and provide feedback to Engineer of Record and Design Engineering on upcoming construction projects
