Lead and scale high-availability banking systems with a global team, navigating complexities to ensure reliability and performance for millions of merchants.

At SumUp, we believe small merchants are the heartbeat of our communities. By joining our Brazil Engineering Team (Payments BR Tribe), you’ll help shape solutions that directly impact how millions of merchants receive and manage their money.

As a key member of the Payments BR Tribe, you’ll help shape and deliver innovative products that make a real difference for our merchants in Brazil. Our banking and payments services power critical financial operations for merchants across the country. These systems operate at high scale, processing large volumes of transactions daily and directly impacting merchants’ cash flow and overall experience. As the ecosystem grows in complexity and adoption, the need for stronger reliability, resilience, and architectural evolution becomes even more critical. You’ll join a global, autonomous, cross-functional team committed to turning bold ideas into seamless, high-impact solutions.

As an Engineering Manager, you will navigate the complexities of scaling high-availability systems that handle millions of transactions while steering your teams through a high-impact transition from local solutions to a unified global architecture. If you are driven by the challenge of turning technical debt into operational excellence and building the "number one bank" for small businesses, this is your next chapter.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead at Scale: Direct two high-performing squads of 4 to 7 engineers each, focusing on building trust and autonomy within a newly formed team. You will oversee the development of critical banking services where improving reliability and scalability is a constant priority.
  • Establish Ownership: Actively establish clear ownership and accountability across your squads, ensuring every engineer understands their impact on the platform's availability and peak performance goals.
  • Strategic Partnership: Work in close collaboration with the Product Manager to define OKRs and navigate complex cross-tribe dependencies, ensuring the roadmap and deliveries are perfectly aligned with business goals.
  • Technical Excellence: Actively participate in technical decisions, conduct code reviews, and define standards for operational excellence to ensure a top-tier merchant experience.
  • Global Convergence: Spearhead the migration and convergence of our local Brazilian platforms into a global architecture, ensuring our technology scales with our international ambitions and impacts millions of users worldwide.
  • Quality & Culture: Guarantee product quality with a steadfast focus on engineering best practices (Clean Code, Testing, CI/CD) and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • 2+ years leading a team of 2–6 engineers as an Engineering Manager (3+ preferred)
  • Previously worked as a Senior Engineer with 5+ years of hands-on backend experience
  • Comfortable being hands-on when needed (architecture discussions, code reviews, technical deep dives)
  • Experience leading medium-to-complex projects across multiple squads or domains
  • Strong experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB, Redis)
  • Experience with queues (SNS/SQS, RabbitMQ) and preferably streaming (Kafka)
  • AWS or comparable cloud experience
  • Experience with modern cloud-native backend technologies (microservices, containers, orchestration)
  • Advanced English proficiency (written and spoken)

Nice to Have

  • Experience in financial services or payments
  • Experience with Golang, Kotlin, Python, or Elixir
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and resilience patterns
