Position Summary
This position leads the consultative engineering function for data center backup power systems (Diesel and Natural Gas generator sets). The role serves as the technical liaison between customer engineering teams, Caterpillar and other generator suppliers, free-issue component providers, packagers, and on-site contractors. The manager ensures that integrated solutions meet customer requirements, reliability standards, emissions compliance, and MacAllister specifications. This position influences technical decisions, validates supplier deliverables, and drives alignment across all stakeholders to achieve successful project outcomes.
Position Duties/Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
- Act as the technical point of contact for customer engineering teams, EPC firms, and commissioning agents on generator system integration projects.
- Establish and enforce process discipline for submittal quality, review cadence, issue management, and change control.
- Translate customer specifications into actionable requirements for packagers and suppliers; maintain traceability from design through commissioning.
- Lead multi-party design reviews (internal and external) to validate compliance, resolve technical gaps, and ensure compatibility with upstream/downstream systems.
- Provide consultative guidance on generator sets, Tier 4 emissions equipment, controls interfaces, and enclosure considerations.
- Review and approve submittals, drawings, and FAT plans; issue comments and manage nonconformance resolution.
- Oversee free-issue component hand-off (gensets, camboards, Tier 4 equipment) and ensure proper integration by packagers.
- Ensure adherence to MacAllister standards, Caterpillar application guidelines, and customer requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support commissioning readiness by coordinating pre-FAT/FAT/IFAT expectations and resolving integration issues.
- Maintain engineering documentation, configuration control, and change management discipline.
- Identify technical risks related to integration, performance, and compliance; implement mitigation strategies.
- Drive continuous improvement by capturing lessons learned and updating standards, templates, and processes.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the execution and interpretation of policies and for the successful operation of assigned units. Has authority for hiring and disciplining employees. May be responsible for directing the work of first-line supervisors
- Lead and develop a team of engineers and technical specialists focused on generator system integration for data center projects.
- Set priorities, allocate resources, and coach team members to build subject matter expertise in data center power systems.
- Establish and enforce process discipline for submittal quality, review cadence, issue management, and change control.
- Manage relationships with Caterpillar, packagers, and strategic suppliers; participate in supplier performance evaluations.
Position Requirements
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in electrical or mechanical systems, with emphasis on diesel and natural gas generator applications.
- 5+ years of engineering management experience
- Proven experience in consultative engineering roles involving coordination with customers, suppliers, and contractors.
- Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical submittals.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for influencing technical decisions across diverse stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams and complex projects.
Preferred:
- Master’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Experience with data center projects or other high-volume engineered-to-order environments, where scalability and repeatability drive engineering decisions.
- Familiarity with critical power infrastructure (UPS, switchgear, paralleling systems).
- Knowledge of Caterpillar Electric Power products and application guidelines.
- Familiarity with NFPA, IEEE, and Uptime Institute standards for data center reliability.
- Experience in commissioning processes (FAT, IFAT) for generator systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks or equivalent).

- Major responsibilities require a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Only general objectives have been defined and few precedents exist.
