Engineering Manager- Enterprise Apps

TLDR

Lead the Rubrik Backup Service development team, overseeing the complete lifecycle of a critical cross-platform backup agent while fostering team growth and collaboration with product management.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Rubrik Backup Service (RBS) development team. This critical role involves owning the complete, end-to-end lifecycle of Rubrik's cross-platform backup agent, from architecture and development through release qualification and resolution of customer issues. The ideal candidate will combine deep expertise in systems software with proven people leadership and a strong history of delivering reliable, enterprise-grade software.

The Team

The RBS team is a key part of the Enterprise Data Protection (EDP) group at Rubrik. The team is responsible for the crucial, cross-platform backup agent that operates on customer hosts across Windows, Linux, and Unix. This agent manages host registration, backup orchestration, agent lifecycle, certificate management, and secure communication. Deployed in thousands of global enterprise environments, the agent is a fundamental component of Rubrik's solution.

What you’ll do

  1. People Leadership and Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and foster the growth of the team, promoting technical excellence and ownership across a complex multi-platform codebase.
  • Drive the team's development cadence, including sprint planning, standups, backlog grooming, retrospectives, and thorough code reviews.
  • Manage performance reviews, set objectives, drive career progression, including promotions and calibrations.
  • Prioritize and manage the team's workload across multiple concurrent priorities: feature development, customer escalations, pipeline health, and technical debt reduction.
  • Oversee vendor/contractor relationships, including quarterly performance reviews and work quality oversight.
  1. Software Architecture and Technical Ownership
  • Take ownership of the architecture and development for the backup agent—a system service on customer hosts handling backup orchestration, registration, lifecycle management, certificate rotation, and secure communication.
  • Ensure robust cross-platform reliability and consistent behavior across Windows, Linux, and Unix variants.
  • Lead significant refactoring and modernization efforts while strictly maintaining backward compatibility across product versions.
  • Maintain the health of the CI/CD pipeline, owning triage for failures, test stability, and build infrastructure for all supported platforms.
  1. Operational Excellence and Customer Focus
  • Act as the primary escalation point for high-priority customer defects, coordinating root cause analysis, developing fixes, and managing patches across multiple release branches.
  • Own and manage release sign-offs for the agent across various product release trains.
  • Provide on-call escalation support, ensuring the team maintains a high level of operational readiness.
  1. Strategic Collaboration and Communication
  • Partner closely with the Product Manager to define and prioritize the product roadmap, effectively balancing new features, customer demands, and technical debt.
  • Collaborate with adjacent platform teams on host-level integration and overall agent behavior.
  • Coordinate with Support, Sales Engineering, and Field teams to resolve customer escalations and satisfaction-impacting issues.
  • Contribute to defining the next-generation agent architecture and the overall cloud-native agent strategy.

Experience & qualifications you’ll need

Education and Professional Background

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 8-10+ years of total experience in software development, with a significant concentration in systems-level programming.
  • 2-3+ years in an engineering management or technical leadership role, with direct management of software development teams.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong foundation in systems software development (e.g., agents, system services, daemons, endpoint software).
  • Proven experience with cross-platform development, including building and shipping production software on Windows, Linux, and ideally Unix variants.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, client-server architectures, and secure communication protocols (e.g., TLS, certificate management).
  • Strong preference for experience with backup/recovery, data protection, or storage infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and test automation frameworks.

Leadership and Management Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop systems engineers across various experience levels.
  • Track record of managing and resolving customer escalations with urgency, including coordinating fixes across multiple release branches.
  • Exceptional project management skills for overseeing multiple concurrent workstreams (features, bug fixes, releases, pipeline health).
  • Experience with release management processes and delivering enterprise software on regular cadences.
  • Proven experience collaborating effectively with Product Management, Support, and Field Engineering teams.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to represent the team's work in quality reviews and cross-functional forums.
