AI overview

Lead a team focused on building and operating a critical underwriting and credit risk platform that impacts multiple downstream products and enhances efficiency in credit decisioning.

About the role

Chime is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for building and operating our underwriting/credit risk platform. This platform provides the foundational services, workflows, and integrations that enable real-time and batch credit decisioning across Chime’s products.

In this role, you’ll focus on leading a team that owns critical platform capabilities—ensuring they are reliable, scalable, well-governed, and easy for downstream teams to build on. You’ll partner closely with Product, Data Science, Risk, and Compliance to ensure the platform supports evolving underwriting strategies while maintaining high standards for correctness and trust.

This job cannot be performed in the state of Colorado.

The base salary offered for this role and level of experience will begin at $199,000 and up to $275,000. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.

In this role, you can expect to

  • Lead a single engineering team responsible for core underwriting and credit risk platform services used by multiple downstream product and data consumers.
  • Partner with Product, Data Science, Risk, and Compliance to translate underwriting strategy and policy requirements into clear platform capabilities and delivery plans.
  • Own team execution and delivery, including planning, prioritization, roadmap sequencing, and dependency management.
  • Guide architectural and technical decisions to ensure the platform meets expectations for correctness, reliability, scalability, observability, security, and auditability.
  • Establish and reinforce best practices for platform design, documentation, versioning, and operational readiness.
  • Manage and develop engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, performance management, and career development.
  • Build a strong culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement, particularly for systems with high business and regulatory impact.
  • Support hiring and onboarding as the team grows, ensuring a high bar for both technical excellence and values alignment.
  • Partner with peer engineering managers to improve cross-team collaboration and platform adoption.

To thrive in this role, you have

  • Will have used platform or infrastructure-oriented systems to build shared services that support complex business logic or decisioning at scale.
  • Will have used service-oriented or distributed architectures to build reliable, well-defined APIs and asynchronous workflows consumed by multiple teams.
  • Will have used cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) to operate systems involving data processing, high availability, and operational monitoring.
  • Have experience leading teams responsible for foundational or enabling platforms, rather than end-user-facing features.
  • Have experience partnering closely with Product, Data, Risk, or Compliance stakeholders in highly constrained or regulated domains.
  • Have prior experience as a software engineer, with strong judgment around technical tradeoffs and long-term platform health.
  • Have 1–3+ years of people management experience, with demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and retain engineers.
  • Are comfortable operating in domains where correctness, data integrity, and trust are as important as delivery speed.
  • Model a leadership style grounded in clarity, accountability, and sound decision-making.
