About the role:

To lead and optimise the safety, reliability, and efficiency of critical assets throughout the lifecycle of the Energy-from-Waste (EfW) plant. Provide technical leadership, ensure compliance with statutory and environmental regulations, and deliver improvement and outage programs aligned with business objectives. Maintain intelligence on emerging technologies, drive innovation, and collaborate with stakeholders to achieve sustainable, cost-effective operations until decommissioning.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure full compliance with statutory, environmental, and safety regulations while driving asset reliability and life-extension.
  • Lead engineering projects, major outages, and plant upgrades, proposing improvements that boost performance and profitability.
  • Optimise maintenance strategies and manage supplier relationships, contracts, and cost-effective procurement.
  • Deliver capital expenditure proposals, support long-term business planning, and manage budgets for outages and essential works.
  • Analyse plant performance data, lead root-cause investigations, and embed a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, and direction to engineering teams and contractors, promoting safety and innovation.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective planning, collaboration, and representation of the Energy Centre.

Requirements

Experience

  • Extensive technical experience in combustion, steam, and water systems within power plant operations
  • Proven track record in designing, costing, and implementing large-scale engineering improvements
  • Experience in managing maintenance and commissioning plans effectively
  • Demonstrable success in budget management and cost control
  • Strong negotiation skills with suppliers and contractors

 

Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and regulations relevant to EfW operations
  • Degree or Higher National Diploma/Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Desirable: Project management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP)
