The Director/Sr Scientific Communications (Medical Affairs) will lead, develop, and manage publication strategy and maintenance. This role will also support designing, implementing, and completing strategic and tactical projects. This role will deliver on Medical Affairs projects and programs within timelines and budgets. Engages in key priorities to help advance the department's value proposition.
What you'll do:
Lead, develop, manage, and drive the overall Medical Affairs publication strategic objectives and deliverables.
Lead operational plans for all Medical Affairs related publication activities
Actively manage and participate in the review process for publications (poster, abstracts, manuscripts etc.) including interactions with authors, medical writers, and all relevant stakeholders.
Effectively and consistently communicate the publication strategy, tactical plan, and plan progress to internal business partners.
Lead development of medical communications initiatives (scientific and medical narrative, slide resources).
Coordinate medical evidence generation publications plan aligned with the integrated medical plan
Collaborate closely with internal and external partners, including writers, business partners, and vendors, to execute impactful publications that align with the team’s strategy and communication objectives
Lead operational aspects of all Medical Affairs programs and projects to ensure successful implementation and operational excellence, including publications strategy and management, educational grants, medical communication, scientific congress planning, and disease awareness, as appropriate.
Lead and maintain the development of medical communication initiatives, including but not limited to scientific narrative, lexicon, medical slide library, and internal/external educational materials
Oversight of outsourcing budget and vendors who assist with analyses and publication content development
Lead and provide project management to various Medical Affairs functional teams
Develop and maintain Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics in close coordination with VP Medical Affairs
Collaborate with internal and field medical personnel to plan and execute logistical and operational aspects of Medical Affairs programs, including but not limited to advisory boards, medical symposia, and CME programs, medical congresses as appropriate
Ensure alignment of programs/projects between Medical Affairs and cross-functional teams that achieve collective goals and strategy
Ensure timely and frequent communication of program strategy
Develop implementation of project plans, risks, and mitigations plans
Support the management and prioritization of publication budgets and allocation of writing resources
Special project support to Patient Advocacy (i.e., managing functional budget and overseeing grant and sponsorship distribution) for patient advocacy projects and organizations
Oversee and manage US and global external expert engagement plans
About you:
BS required. Advanced science degree or MBA preferred
Prior experience in Medical Affairs or Clinical Development within the biopharmaceutical industry
Strong interpersonal communication skills; proven ability to work with all levels within the organization
Proven track record working in operations management in a matrix structure
Deep understanding of multifaceted Medical Affairs functions and operations
People management experience
Familiar with current guidelines to ensure corporate compliance in all activities
Aptitude in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to collaborate in a matrix environment
Aptitude in presentation skills, professional appearance and demeanor
Ability to comprehend and communicate complex technical/medical terminology and to maintain the required technical expertise including competitive product knowledge
Must be self-motivated and disciplined
Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work independently and as an integral team member
The ability to work in teams and interface in a dynamic environment across corporate functions
Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to articulate clearly and conduct verbal presentations with large and small audiences
Occasional travel may be required up to 20%
