Job Description

Under the general direction of the General Manager, the Director of Group Fitness has oversight responsibility and directs all activities including class and program execution including but not limited to the following formats: conditioning, strength, mat Pilates, indoor cycling, flexibility, yoga, meditation, sound baths and aquatics, as well as

Woodside branded and specialty classes. Responsible for strategy development, implementation, program performance tracking and all related aspects of the Group Fitness department operations through management of the department.

Responsibilities

Strategy & Oversight

  • Leads strategic group fitness plan that outlines objectives and key areas of focus for the Group Fitness department

  • Creates innovative group fitness concepts and experiential events that foster community connection, showcase instructor talent and elevate the overall member experience

  • Oversees a comprehensive program offering of approximately 150 classes per week

  • Ensures the delivery of a group fitness experience designed to meet and exceed members’ expectations

  • Sets goals (number and type of classes, targeted populations, member penetration, class attendance/waiting list metrics, etc.) and implements plans to achieve the determined/approved goals

  • Maximize Woodside’s group fitness programs and facilities to reduce attrition and attract new members

  • Researches trends in the group fitness industry and remains current on local competitors’ offerings, programs, pricing, instructor compensation, etc.

  • Manages all aspects of Woodside branded classes and Woodside’s boutique concept – The Lab

Management & Collaboration

  • Oversees the Group Fitness Manager and the Group Fitness Instructors (GFI’s) including but not limited to: recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and terminating based on performance and accepted work practices and all city, state and federal labor regulations, laws and standards

  • Develops and documents class formats/protocols and provides initial/ongoing continuing education training to GFI team

  • Manages instructor compensation/advancement plans and evaluates/reviews (with input from the GFM) every GFI at minimum once per year

  • Works with third-party vendors/partners to further develop class experiences (e.g., Cycle Studio immersive experience project with Dimensional Innovations, The Lab, etc.)

  • Collaborates with the Woodside Director of Training to help assess classes, as well as offer feedback on movement selection, proper form and safety of class formats

  • Supplies Director of Marketing with all group fitness related updates for the Club communication publications – internal, external and employee pertinent departmental information and content for inclusion in club email newsletter, website, digital signage, social media, etc.

  • Coordinates with Director of Facilities & Director of Member Staff to coordinate schedule changes, program processes and other various operational duties that affect the group fitness program

Member Relations

  • Offers new member group fitness consultations in an effort to recommend suitable classes and drive early engagement with Woodside’s group fitness offerings

  • Promotes member relations as part of daily routine, including walking the club, talking with class participants prior to and after classes, taking classes, spontaneous interactions, etc.

  • Ensures that all members and guests receive courteous, prompt and professional attention to all their group fitness needs/questions/concerns

Administrative & Financial

  • Coordinates with the General Manager & Controller to develop the budget for the Group Fitness department; takes actions as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met

  • Completes required reporting documents including: monthly budget reports, expense tracking, program participation reports, payroll reports and others, as defined

  • Completes monthly forecasting and reforecasting the most current budget to date and is prepared to discuss all variances in monthly financial meeting

  • Ensures maintenance of studio audio/visual equipment & technology and cleanliness standards of all studios

  • Sources and places appropriate orders for department supplies, equipment and other expenses

  • Recommends departmental policies, procedures and best practices and maintains an up-to-date version of the Group Fitness Department Policies & Procedure manual

  • Attends club functions and conducts staff meetings, department socials, workshops and trainings, as deemed necessary

  • Evaluates and disciplines personnel where appropriate; maintains a working knowledge of Woodside policies regarding handling of staff and related issues; works to administer prompt, fair and consistent corrective action for any and all violations of company policies, rules and procedures

  • Executes departmental update meeting with the CEO/CBO/GM, as requested

  • Participates and fulfills all requirements set forth in the Continuing Education Curriculum (Woodside University) Program

  • Completes all other duties as directed/assigned

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a related health or fitness field (e.g., Exercise Science, Kinesiology or Physical Education) required

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred and additional business/management a plus

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing all aspects of a robust group fitness offering

  • Excellent leadership skills

Location
