Director of Finance

TLDR

Own and build the full finance function at Chalk, partnering closely with executive leadership to shape capital planning and performance measurement.

About Chalk

Chalk is building the data platform that powers the future of machine learning applications. We tear down complexity, latency, and scale barriers that have traditionally constrained ML capabilities. Our platform combines Rust-speed performance with elegant tools that developers love to use. Leading companies depend on Chalk for everything from stopping fraudulent credit card swipes, verifying identities, and maximizing clean energy capture. We've recently raised a $50 million Series A, led by Felicis.

About the role

We're seeking an exceptional Director of Finance to own all aspects of finance at Chalk. This is a senior leadership role responsible for building and running the full finance function — from financial planning and analysis to accounting, tax, compliance, and treasury.

You'll partner closely with executive leadership to shape how we plan, allocate capital, and measure performance as we scale. This role sits at the center of Chalk's operating model and is an opportunity to build a world-class finance organization from the ground up at a high-growth company.

We are open to leveling this role at the Senior Manager or VP level depending on experience.

We're in the office 5 days a week at our offices in SF and NY. When unavoidable conflicts come up, we’re flexible. This is not a hybrid role.

What you will do

  • Own all aspects of finance at Chalk — including FP&A, accounting, tax, compliance, and treasury — and build the team, systems, and processes to support the company as it scales
  • Lead financial planning processes including annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and long-term operating models in partnership with executive leadership
  • Partner with leadership to develop long-term financial plans, company operating models, and strategic growth scenarios
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to evaluate investment priorities and identify opportunities for operational leverage
  • Partner with Revenue Operations to establish deal desk processes, set pricing guardrails, evaluate deal economics, and support pricing strategies that maximize long-term customer value and retention
  • Develop financial models to evaluate unit economics, investment ROI, capital efficiency, and growth scenarios to support strategic decision making
  • Work closely with company leadership to support board materials, investor updates, and strategic planning discussions
  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to leadership by analyzing trade-offs, guiding resource allocation, and helping drive key strategic decisions

What we’re looking for

  • 8+ years of finance experience spanning FP&A, accounting, and financial operations, with prior ownership of a full finance function preferred
  • Experience at a high-growth technology company; familiarity with usage-based or SaaS business models is a strong plus
  • Deep experience with usage-based or consumption-driven business models, including revenue forecasting, pricing analysis, and revenue recognition considerations
  • Strong command of unit economics, cohort analysis, customer lifetime value (LTV), and retention metrics
  • Fluency in SaaS and operating metrics such as ARR, NRR, CAC payback, Magic Number, Rule of 40, and related performance indicators
  • Experience partnering closely with GTM teams (Sales, RevOps, Marketing) to support pipeline forecasting and revenue planning
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial concepts into clear insights for executive audiences
  • Expert-level proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets for financial modeling and analysis
  • Technical aptitude with SQL and Python for data analysis (experience with Hex is a strong plus)
  • Proven ability to build scalable financial processes and operate effectively in fast-paced, high-growth environments with ambiguity
  • A builder mindset — comfortable operating with ambiguity and excited to create structure where little exists today
