The Challenge

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering. While a hybrid arrangement is preferred, we are open to remote candidates within the following states: California, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, and Washington.

As the Director of Engineering, you will lead and develop a small team of engineers responsible for the design and development of game software. This is a people-first leadership role where you will mentor your team, build organizational capability, and foster a culture of excellence. Working closely with senior management, you will drive technical vision and strategy while ensuring successful delivery through effective resource management, prioritization, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Director of Engineering will:

  • Lead, mentor and develop our engineering team, conducting regular reviews, providing coaching, and fostering technical excellence
  • Set clear expectations and hold teams accountable to high standards while maintaining morale and addressing performance issues with transparency and fairness
  • Define technical standards and architectural best practices, ensuring consistency and quality across all development efforts
  • Drive the technical vision, aligning engineering strategy with business objectives
  • Lead cross-functional technical discussions with design, art, production, and other departments to ensure seamless collaboration
  • Collaborate with senior management on critical trade-offs involving timelines, budgets, processes and software functionality
  • Proactively identify and remove blockers across engineering initiatives, ensuring teams maintain momentum and deliver on critical milestones
  • Establish and enforce code quality standards, development processes and optimization efforts

To succeed, you should have:

  • 10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5+ years of management experience supporting an Engineering team within the gaming industry
  • Shipped 2+ games with at least 1 in a management capacity
  • Proven track record of building, leading and developing high-executing engineering teams
  • Exceptional people management skills with demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and grow technical talent
  • Familiar with working in game engines, such as Unreal Engine or Unity, with a strong preference towards experience with Unreal 4 or 5
  • Experience with 3D single and multiplayer games
  • Experience implementing and championing engineering best practices
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

For local San Francisco Bay Area candidates at the mid-level range showing 10+ years of relevant experience, the starting base pay salary range is $225,000 - $285,000 + target annual bonus. The final base pay will be determined by individualized factors such as candidate location, skills and level of experience.
