About Quizlet: At Quizlet, our mission is to help every learner achieve their outcomes in the most effective and delightful way. Our $1B+ learning platform serves tens of millions of students every month,  including two-thirds of U.S. high schoolers and half of U.S. college students, powering over 2 billion learning interactions monthly. We blend cognitive science with machine learning to personalize and enhance the learning experience for students, professionals, and lifelong learners alike. We’re energized by the potential to power more learners through multiple approaches and various tools. Let’s Build the Future of Learning Join us to design and deliver AI-powered learning tools that scale across the world and unlock human potential. About the Role: We are seeking a Director of Engineering to define and lead Quizlet’s global community strategy—shaping how learners, educators, and creators connect, contribute, and thrive together. This role owns the vision for community programs, contribution models, and governance systems that foster high-quality participation, trust, and long-term engagement across Quizlet’s ecosystem. You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, Legal, and Marketing teams to ensure community experiences scale responsibly, align with learning outcomes, and evolve alongside new social and AI-powered features. Remember that strong communities are built as much on systems and incentives as they are on people and culture. We’re happy to share that this is an onsite position in our San Francisco office. To help foster team collaboration, we require that employees be in the office a minimum of three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and as needed by your manager or the company. We believe this work environment enhances efficiency, fosters collaboration, and supports growth for both employees and the organization. In this role, you will:
  • Define and own the long-term strategy for Quizlet’s learner, educator, and creator communities across products and platforms
  • Establish clear principles for participation, contribution, and belonging that support diverse learning identities and roles
  • Translate community needs into scalable programs, policies, and systems in partnership with Product and Engineering
  • Own community contribution and reputation frameworks (e.g., badges, privileges, recognition programs) that incentivize high-quality, safe participation
  • Guide the evolution of study groups, creator communities, and collaborative learning experiences
  • Ensure community initiatives drive meaningful engagement, learning outcomes, and creator sustainability—not just growth metrics
  • Collaborate closely with Trust & Safety to ensure community policies, moderation workflows, and enforcement models support healthy participation at scale
  • Partner with Legal and Privacy teams to embed consent, transparency, and compliance into all community programs and policies
  • Serve as a senior voice on community governance, norms, and ethical considerations as new features and AI-assisted experiences are introduced
  • Lead and scale a high-performing community team across strategy, programs, operations, and moderation partnerships
  • Establish metrics and operating rhythms to measure community health, trust, and long-term value—not just short-term engagement
  • Influence company-level strategy by representing the voice of the community in executive and cross-functional forums
  • What you bring to the table:
  • 10+ years of experience in community, trust & safety, social platforms, or user-generated content ecosystems
  • 5+ years leading and scaling teams, including managers and senior leaders
  • Proven track record helping communities grow while maintaining trust, quality, and clear governance
  • Strong cross-functional partnership skills with Product, Engineering, Legal, and Trust & Safety
  • Deep understanding of online communities, contribution systems, and social or collaborative learning environments
  • Experience designing reputation, incentives, and participation frameworks at scale
  • Familiarity with moderation models, policy development, and abuse prevention systems
  • Experience with AI-influenced or AI-assisted community experiences is a plus
  • Community-first and trust-driven approach to platform and program design
  • Comfort operating at both strategic and execution levels
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and align diverse stakeholders
  • Strong commitment to inclusion, ethical technology, and long-term community health
