Director of Engineering, Commercialization

AI overview

Lead software engineering efforts for Waymo One, driving innovation in autonomous ride-hailing with a focus on user experience and team growth.

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Waymo Commercialization team works on Waymo One, our public, fully autonomous ride-hailing service. Riders can use the Waymo One app to hail one of our vehicles (with no human driver in the front seat!) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our riders get a clean vehicle every time and a Driver with more than 20 million miles of experience on public roads.

In this hybrid role, you will report to our Senior Director of Engineering, Commercialization.

You will:

  • Engineering lead for our Waymo One consumer service, responsible for the full stack of software

  • Work with engineering leads and cross functional stakeholders to develop a roadmap and prioritize tasks with both the fleet tooling and transportation-as-a-service areas of Waymo

  • Review technical plans, so we can build a sustainable long-term business with high reliability and minimal tech debt

  • Hire and grow the team, identify team or leadership gaps, and structure the team to meet scaling goals

  • Review the product and work with client teams to identify gaps in our tooling

You have:

  • Experience managing a large consumer-facing service, ideally in an app-based (rather than web-based) setup

  • Strong sense of user advocacy. We’re looking for some impatient to please users and unwilling to sit back and let the team turn the crank on existing plans.

  • Strong advocacy for the user experience in a hands-on way by experiencing the product and using that as inspiration for bugs, team prioritization, org design, etc.

  • Data-driven ability to identify gaps and how to plug those holes

  • Experience with scaling a medium app company into a large app company

We prefer:

  • Experience managing both application and backend systems

  • Experience at a ride-hailing or delivery company

  • Has managed a P&L and optimized for CAC and revenue targets
