Lead the global implementation of Workday and drive systematic AI integration in the HR tech stack while improving employee experience through automation.

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

As the Director of People Technology, you will be the strategic architect of our global HR systems. Your immediate mission is to lead our global implementation of Workday (HCM, Talent, Performance) alongside US Payroll and Benefits. Beyond the initial rollout, you will own the long-term roadmap for our entire HR tech stack, with a mandate to aggressively leverage AI and automation to eliminate administrative friction and create a seamless experience for our employees.

Key Responsibilities

Global Workday Implementation & Leadership

  • Act as the Strategic Lead for the global rollout of Workday HCM, Talent, and Performance modules.
  • Directly oversee the implementation of US Payroll and Benefits, ensuring 100% compliance and data integrity.
  • Manage external implementation partners and internal cross-functional teams to ensure milestones are met on time and within budget.

Strategy, AI & Automation

  • The AI Mandate: Identify and integrate AI-driven solutions (generative AI, chatbots, predictive analytics) to automate routine HR tasks and provide proactive insights to managers.
  • Process Optimization: Conduct a "root cause" analysis of current HR workflows to simplify and automate processes before migrating them to new systems.
  • Experience Design: Shift HR tech from "transactional" to "relational," ensuring every tool is intuitive and mobile-friendly.

Team Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a team of People Systems Analysts, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, technical curiosity, and high service standards.
  • Resource Allocation: Manage the team’s roadmap, balancing long-term project work (Workday rollout, M&A integrations) with day-to-day system maintenance and "keep-the-lights-on" support.
  • Capability Building: Upskill the team on modern technical competencies, specifically moving from manual processes and reporting to automated workflows and AI-assisted analytics.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the bridge between your technical analysts and the broader HR, Finance, and IT departments to ensure system updates meet business needs.

M&A & Systems Integration

  • Due Diligence & Discovery: Conduct comprehensive technical audits of the HR tech stacks of target companies; identify security risks, data quality issues, and redundant software costs.
  • Integration Strategy: Determine the optimal path for acquired systems based on deal guidelines—whether that involves a full "lift and shift" into Workday, maintaining standalone systems with custom API bridges, or a phased sunsetting of legacy tools.
  • Data Migration & Mapping: Lead the mapping of employee data (EE data) from acquired systems into our global Workday instance, ensuring historical data integrity and continuity of service for new hires.
  • Day One Readiness: Ensure all acquired employees have seamless access to essential tools (Payroll, Benefits, SSO) from the moment the deal closes, minimizing friction during the transition.

System Governance & Data Integrity

  • Own the entire HR Tech ecosystem (ATS, LMS, Engagement tools, etc.), ensuring all systems "talk" to each other via robust integrations.
  • Establish data governance standards to ensure global reporting is accurate, scalable, and compliant (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).
  • Manage the HR Tech budget, vendor negotiations, and ROI analysis for all new software acquisitions.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 10+ years in HR Technology, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Workday Expertise: Proven track record of leading at least one full-lifecycle Global Workday Implementation (HCM/Payroll is a must).
  • Technical Literacy: Deep understanding of HRIS architecture, API integrations, and data privacy regulations.
  • The "Future" Factor: Demonstrated experience or a strong thesis on how to apply AI and Automation within the HR domain to drive efficiency.
  • Leadership Experience: 3+ years of experience directly managing technical teams (Systems Analysts, HRIS Specialists, or similar).
  • Mentorship: Proven ability to translate complex business requirements into technical tasks for a team to execute flawlessly.
  • Change Management: Ability to lead an organization through the "growing pains" of a major system migration with empathy and clear communication.
  • M&A Track Record: Direct experience managing the HR technology workstream of an acquisition or merger, specifically around data migration and system consolidation.
