We’re seeking an experienced Database Administrator to join our UtiliSphere platform team. This is a critical role focused on ensuring the performance, reliability, and scalability of our database systems that power utility management solutions used by customers nationwide. You’ll be the database expert who proactively prevents issues, rapidly troubleshoots production incidents, and partners with development teams to build performant, scalable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Production Support & Troubleshooting
· Investigate and resolve database performance issues in live production environments experiencing slowdowns or overload conditions
· Respond to database-related incidents with urgency, conducting root cause analysis and implementing both immediate and long-term resolutions
· Monitor database health metrics and proactively identify potential issues before they impact users
· Participate in on-call rotation for critical database support
Performance Optimization
· Analyze slow-running queries and provide optimization recommendations to development teams
· Review and optimize database indexes based on query patterns and execution plans
· Conduct regular performance tuning of SQL queries, stored procedures, and ORM-generated queries
· Identify and resolve N+1 query problems, inefficient joins, and other common performance SQL anti-patterns
Development Collaboration
· Participate in code reviews to identify database-related issues before they reach production
· Provide guidance on database schema design, normalization, and data modeling best practices
· Advise developers on efficient data access patterns and ORM usage (Entity Framework, LINQ)
· Create and maintain database coding standards and best practices documentation
Database Administration
· Assist Infrastructure teams with database capacity planning, growth analysis, and scaling strategies
· Advise on database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures
· Advise Infrastructure teams on plans for database migrations, upgrades, and maintenance windows
Strategic Initiatives
· Develop database performance monitoring and alerting strategies
· Identify opportunities for database architecture improvements and modernization
· Contribute to technical debt reduction efforts related to database performance
· Mentor developers on database optimization techniques and best practices
Requirements
7-10+ years of experience as a Database Administrator or Database Engineer
· Expert-level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (version 2016 or later)
· Proven track record of troubleshooting and resolving production database performance issues
· Deep understanding of query optimization, execution plans, and indexing strategies
· Experience with database monitoring tools and performance analysis
· Strong knowledge of T-SQL, stored procedures, and database programming
· Familiarity with ORM frameworks (Entity Framework preferred) and their performance implications
· Experience with database backup, recovery, and high availability solutions
· Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure during incidents
· Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to developers and stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with Azure SQL Database or AWS RDS
· Knowledge of database DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines
· Familiarity with .NET development and understanding of application architecture
· Experience with database migration strategies and tools
· Background in utility or energy sector applications
· Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
· Experience with NoSQL databases and polyglot persistence patterns
· Knowledge of data warehousing and analytics platforms
