Data Scientist - Remote Sensing

AI overview

Work on developing high-performance remote sensing and computer vision pipelines while transforming satellite imagery into actionable insights for complex geospatial problems.
At Kpler, we are dedicated to helping our clients navigate complex markets with ease. By simplifying global trade information and providing valuable insights, we empower organisations to make informed decisions in commodities, energy, and maritime sectors. Since our founding in 2014, we have focused on delivering top-tier intelligence through user-friendly platforms. Our team of over 700 experts from 35+ countries works tirelessly to transform intricate data into actionable strategies, ensuring our clients stay ahead in a dynamic market landscape. Join us to leverage cutting-edge innovation for impactful results and experience unparalleled support on your journey to success. We build data products that transform satellite and drone imagery into reliable, operational insights at global scale. As part of our remote sensing team, you will work with multi-modal satellite data—including optical and SAR imagery (such as ESA Sentinel missions)—while contributing to a platform that increasingly integrates multiple satellite providers and sensing modalities. This role is designed for a mid-level data scientist or remote sensing engineer who enjoys applied remote sensing, working with complex geospatial data, and seeing algorithms evolve from research into production systems. What you’ll work on
  • Analyse and process diverse satellite imagery, leveraging both optical and SAR data sources to extract actionable insights.
  • Apply spatio-temporal analysis to detect, classify, and monitor physical activity and assets over time.
  • Design and implement methods that generalise across different satellite providers and spectral bands.
  • Combine multiple sensing modalities (Optical, SAR, and complementary geospatial data) to improve model reliability.
  • Build and improve production-grade processing pipelines for global-scale analysis.
  • Collaborate with engineers to integrate model outputs into APIs and customer-facing applications.
  • Improve model robustness, performance, and interpretability.
  • Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain high-performance remote sensing and computer vision pipelines.
  • Apply machine learning, statistical, or signal-processing techniques to solve complex geospatial problems.
  • Contribute across the full lifecycle, from initial data exploration and research to production deployment.
  • Work with heterogeneous data sources and evolving data schemas.
  • Optimize processing performance and system scalability.
  • Participate in code reviews and advocate for engineering best practices.

  • Skills and Experience
  • 3–6 years of experience in remote sensing, computer vision, or applied data science.
  • Strong Python proficiency and experience with geospatial libraries (e.g., rasterio, shapely, geopandas, xarray, or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience working with satellite imagery, with a strong understanding of optical and/or SAR data (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 experience is highly valued).
  • Experience with satellite time series and large-scale geospatial datasets.
  • Ability to deliver production-ready workflows and solid software engineering fundamentals.

  • Nice to have
  • Significant experience in general Computer Vision, including object detection, semantic segmentation, change detection, or anomaly detection.
  • Proficiency with CV/ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or OpenCV.
  • Experience working with multiple commercial or open-source satellite data providers.
  • Experience with drone (UAV) imagery processing and advanced geometry computation (e.g., photogrammetry, coordinate transformations, or 3D reconstruction).
  • Knowledge of Radiometry and Radiometric Calibration.
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools like Airflow.
  • Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS/GCP) and database knowledge (SQL/Postgres/PostGIS).
  • We are a dynamic company dedicated to nurturing connections and innovating solutions to tackle market challenges head-on. If you thrive on customer satisfaction and turning ideas into reality, then you’ve found your ideal destination. Are you ready to embark on this exciting journey with us?
