The role: We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to drive the design, development, and optimisation of our data platform. This role is critical in shaping our data engineering practices, enabling high-quality analytics, and ensuring reliable data delivery across the organisation.

We’re looking for someone who is a strong technical leader, with experience in the Microsoft data stack or similar platforms. You’ll collaborate with senior stakeholders, communicate clearly, and help set high engineering standards by leading through example.

Salary: £90,000 per annum DOE

Key accountabilities/ responsibilities:

• Lead the design, build, and maintenance of scalable data pipelines and data platform components.
• Architect and optimise solutions using Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory (ADF), Databricks, and related Azure services.
• Oversee data ingestion, transformation, and integration processes to support analytics, reporting, and operational data needs.
• Mentor and guide a team of data engineers, promoting best practices and engineering standards.
• Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and product owners to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Ensure data quality, governance, and security standards are upheld across all data engineering deliverables.
• Evaluate new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance the data engineering function.
• Support the evolution of our cloud data strategy and contribute to architectural decisions.

Requirements

Technical Expertise

Strong hands-on experience with:

1. Azure SQL / SQL Server
2. Azure Data Factory (ADF) for orchestration and data pipelines
3. Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, PySpark/Scala)
4. Azure cloud services (Storage, Key Vault, Functions, etc.)

• Proven experience designing and implementing modern data architectures (e.g., lakehouse, data warehouse, ELT frameworks).
• Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (Python preferred).
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices for data engineering.
• Experience working with structured and unstructured data at scale.

Desirable / Nice to Have

• Snowflake: exposure to Snowflake architecture, SQL, and pipelines.
• Dynamics 365 / Dataverse: understanding of underlying data structures and integration approaches.
• Experience with Power BI data modelling concepts.
• Knowledge of data governance tools and practices.

Interpersonal skills

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management — able to engage with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Strong leadership qualities with experience mentoring or guiding engineering teams.
• A collaborative, personable approach — able to build trust and influence across the organisation.
