Mama Money is a growth-stage fintech on a mission to improve the financial lives of migrants and underserved communities across Africa and beyond. What started in 2015 as a cross-border payments service has grown into a multi-product financial platform. We give people the tools to send, save, and manage money — on their own terms, at a socially fair price.
Mama HQ is in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. We're 150 people strong (and counting), representing 19 countries across Africa, Asia, the UK, and Europe. We are looking for a Data Engineer to build and grow our Data function of our data intelligence, analytics and engineering at Mama Money.
As our Data Engineer you will:
Work closely with Product and Development teams to help deliver components of the data roadmap
Gain a strong understanding of the organisation’s data needs and contribute to building accessible, reliable data solutions
Develop an interest across key business areas such as customer acquisition, conversion, retention, commercial performance, and user experience
Build, refine, and deliver data backlog items in collaboration with the Agile development team
Design, build, and maintain data pipelines, integrations, and transformations to support business reporting and analytics
Support data analysis, dashboard development, and self-service analytics by providing clean, well-structured datasets
Implement data management best practices to ensure data quality, consistency, and reliability
Apply techniques for accurate and complete data collection and validationFollow secure and efficient procedures for data handling, storage, and processing
Assist colleagues with data access, extracts, and reporting as required
Monitor data systems and pipelines to identify issues, performance bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement
Troubleshoot data-related issues and support routine maintenance and enhancements
Help ensure data platforms and databases are protected from data loss and security risks
Analyse data trends and provide well-structured datasets to support informed decision-making
About you:
Experience working as a Data Engineer
Solid understanding of data analysis, BI, and analytics practices
Familiarity with modern databases, data warehouses, and data platforms
Experience with at least one BI tool (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, Qlik)
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
Good communication and time management skills
Has experience with building Data pipelines and ETL processes
Needs to be adequate with PythonExperience working with dbt
