Data Engineer II

AI overview

Design and build data pipelines across Snowflake, AWS, and Kafka, enabling AI and analytics while collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve data-driven solutions.

Our Opportunity

Chewy’s AI & Data organization is seeking a Data Engineer II to design and build reliable, high-performance data pipelines that power analytics, machine learning, and decision-making across the company. EDS provides the unified, well-governed data platform that enables every Chewy team—from Customer Care to Finance to Marketing—to operate with speed and confidence.

As a Data Engineer II, you’ll operate as an independent owner—designing, implementing, and maintaining production-grade data workflows. You’ll collaborate across AI, data science, and engineering teams to ensure our data is accurate, timely, and ready for use in analytics and AI. You’ll balance problem solving, optimization, and innovation as you scale our Snowflake and dbt Cloud environments, while exploring how emerging AI tools can accelerate data engineering.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain batch and streaming pipelines across Snowflake, AWS, and Kafka.
  • Develop dbt Cloud models to standardize business metrics, enforce testing, and improve lineage visibility.
  • Integrate data from multiple sources—including Kafka, APIs, S3, and internal systems—into unified datasets.
  • Implement monitoring and alerting for data freshness, quality, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and product partners to translate business requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Optimize pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Write clean, test-covered code and unit tests; apply secure coding principles.
  • Ensure correct application of data validation and cleansing processes to all sources.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and documentation to drive best practices.
  • Contribute to AI-driven modernization initiatives, such as LLM-assisted data quality checks and automation frameworks.

What You’ll Need

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering or a related role.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with Snowflake and dbt Cloud for modeling and orchestration.
  • Familiarity with Kafka or other streaming systems.
  • Hands-on Terraform proficiency to build and modify AWS/Snowflake data infrastructure—author simple modules, manage remote state/workspaces, and ship changes via CI/CD with rollback.
  • Understanding of ETL/ELT patternsdata modeling, and workflow orchestration.
  • Awareness of data governanceobservability, and testing best practices.
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted engineering and a mindset of continuous experimentation.
  • Clear, proactive communication and strong cross-functional collaboration skills.

Why You’ll Love This Role

  • Own the design and delivery of data systems that directly enable AI and analytics at Chewy scale.
  • Collaborate with engineers and scientists on data products that improve operational excellence and customer experience.
  • Work with modern tools and cutting-edge AI capabilities in a fast-moving environment.
  • Grow into technical leadership by taking ownership of impactful, cross-functional pipelines.
