Your mission

We are seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and collaborative Credit Risk Underwriter to join our growing team. In this role, you will report to the Regional Underwriting Director and play a key part in ensuring a smooth and efficient onboarding experience for Nuvei clients in Japan. You will apply Know Your Customer (KYC) and due diligence procedures to both prospective and existing clients, supporting compliance and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (Finance or related field preferred).  
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in risk management and/or underwriting.  
  • Strong understanding of compliance rules and regulations in Japan.  
  • Familiarity with card schemes and payment processing preferred.  
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (AML, KYC, MSO) in Japan is an advantage.  
  • Previous experience in the payments or banking industry is an advantage.  
  • Fluent in English and Japanese (mandatory).  
  • Professional communication and correspondence skills.  
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration abilities.  
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel skills required) and computer literacy.  
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.  
  • Ability to work independently and handle pressure effectively.  
  • Good business sense and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 

Responsibilities

Client Onboarding & Compliance 

  • Apply due diligence and KYC/KYB procedures during client onboarding. 
  • Review merchant applications to ensure activities fall within approved parameters. 
  • Identify, investigate, and report potentially suspicious applications. 
  • Perform all necessary KYC/KYB functions in accordance with card scheme and regulatory requirements. 

Risk & Business Model Analysis 

  • Analyze and assess online business models for risk and compliance. 
  • Conduct detailed credit and risk analysis of merchant accounts to determine creditworthiness and identify potential risks. 
  • Make decisions regarding merchant processing activity to mitigate losses to the company. 
  • Ensure merchant activities accurately represent their business model to reduce exposure. 

Regulatory & Internal Coordination 

  • Monitor business activities to ensure compliance with local regulations and company policies. 
  • Liaise with banking authorities, regulators, and financial institutions as needed. 
  • Collaborate closely with the global Underwriting team to align processes and share best practices. 
  • Maintain communication and collaboration with partners, merchants, and internal teams. 

Reporting & Documentation 

  • Prepare and maintain documentation, including communication materials and scheme updates. 
  • Provide various reports to management on status, risks, and change requests related to card scheme initiatives. 
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills in data review, drawing conclusions, and preparing written summaries with holistic business recommendations. 

Operational Efficiency 

  • Process applications efficiently and with analytical thinking to streamline underwriting workload. 
  • Answer internal and external inquiries regarding underwriting issues. 
  • Conduct research and provide insights as required. 
  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as assigned.
