Voter Formation Project (VFP) is a 501(c)3 organization committed to increasing participation in elections using innovative, long-term, and data-driven digital communications strategies to engage, register, and mobilize new and infrequent voters of color.
VFP is seeking an experienced and visionary Creative Director to join our team. The Creative Director will manage and oversee Voter Formation Project’s creative function, casting a vision, building a plan, and executing on that vision to deliver creative products that support the core mission of the organization. The Creative Director will report to the Director of Programs and will work closely with the Media Director and other leaders to accomplish the work of the Voter Formation Project.
We’re looking for an experienced manager of people; someone that can inspire others, taking our creative to a new level as we continue to grow. The ideal candidate will have a natural eye for design and a drive to inspire dynamic ideas that connect with all types of audiences.
As the Creative Director you will:
- Build, lead, and review the work of a cross-functional creative team including graphic designers, copywriters, and videographers in the strategic development of messages and deliverables.
- Translate campaign objectives into clear creative concepts
- Collaborate with members of the Programs team to develop creative campaigns and design concepts that meet the objectives of the organization.
- Lead brainstorms, contribute ideas to achieve goals, and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver successful projects.
- Meet budget standards by forecasting and managing expenses.
- Supervise the creative team in the production of digital programmatic collateral, including a variety of graphic and video assets.
- Prioritize work and resources across engagements based on short- and long-term needs, establishing production schedules by collaborating with designers, copywriters, and other stakeholders.
- Present—or oversee presentation of—final concepts, and obtain approvals for deliverables.
The qualifications
- The ideal candidate will have experience with the following, but they don’t need to have every qualification listed to apply:
- 6+ years of related experience in design, art/creative direction, or a related field.
- Experience with people management, either with direct reports, contractors, or a combination.
- Experience developing creative for paid digital campaigns is preferred.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to build, develop, and maintain systems.
- Strong communication skills, allowing the development of healthy working relationships with internal and external partners.
- Capacity to work independently and with self-direction as well as collaboratively with individuals of varying backgrounds and skill sets.
- Experience using Adobe Creative Suite products.
- Interest in continuous improvement and professional development, including staying up-to-date on best practices and platform changes.
- Enthusiasm for Voter Formation Project’s mission and vision.

- Experience working cross functionally with paid media teams.
- Experience working to engage communities of color through creative design.
- 2+ years experience managing an internal team of creative professionals.

While the Voter Formation Project is an organization that works in political cycles, we whole-heartedly reject campaign culture and are focused on developing new, healthy norms for campaign work—even in-cycle.
Voter Formation Project operates on the four-day work week. In general, we work from Monday to Thursday and are closed on Fridays (holiday schedules may shift our work week). Our four days of work are standard eight-hour work days; we do not work a schedule of four ten-hour days.
