Course: Backend Automation Test

TLDR

Students will gain hands-on experience in backend test automation using industry-standard tools such as Postman and Playwright, culminating in a complete automation project presentation.

This course is designed to provide a solid and practical foundation in backend test automation using Postman, Newman, and Playwright, with JavaScript/TypeScript as the core programming languages.

Students will learn how to design, automate, and execute API tests, validate business rules, handle authentication flows, and integrate automated tests into CI pipelines.

The course goes beyond simple request validation, focusing on strategic backend quality, test architecture, and real-world automation practices aligned with modern development workflows.

Course Outline

Module 1: Backend Foundations & First API Calls

Content:

Introduction to fundamental backend concepts, client-server architectures, basics of HTTP, RESTful APIs, HTTP status codes, handling JSON data structures, making API calls with GET requests, understanding API responses, and validating essential data structures.

Module 2: Advanced API Calls & Response Validation

Content:

Students will explore additional API endpoints, work with query parameters and pagination, and perform deeper response validations. The focus is on analyzing JSON structures, validating arrays and nested objects, and strengthening critical backend testing thinking.

Module 3: Test Automation with Postman Scripts

Content:

This module introduces API test automation using Postman. Students will write JavaScript test scripts, create assertions, manage environment variables, and organize collections professionally. The goal is to transform manual API testing into structured, automated validation.

Module 4: Introduction to Playwright for API Testing

Content:

Students will transition from Postman to code-based automation using Playwright with JavaScript/TypeScript. This module introduces project structure, scalable test architecture, and automated API validation using a modern testing framework.

Module 5: Advanced API Automation & Test Architecture

Content:

This module deepens Playwright API automation by implementing reusable request contexts, data-driven testing strategies, and structured test organization. Students will learn how to build maintainable and scalable backend test suites.

Module 6:Integration Workflows & Data Validation

Content:

Students will automate multi-step backend workflows such as CRUD operations and chained requests. The focus is on validating data consistency across requests and understanding integration-level testing scenarios.

Module 7 -CI Integration & Backend Quality Strategy

Content:

This module introduces automated execution in CI environments using Newman and Playwright. It also covers backend quality strategy, execution pipelines, response time validation concepts, and professional automation practices aligned with modern DevOps workflows.

Module 8 – Final Project & Presentation

Content:

In the final module, students will build and present a complete backend test automation project. The project includes authenticated flows, CRUD validation, automated execution, and structured test reporting. The module concludes with student presentations and technical discussion.
