To learn more, visit us at www.appzen.com. AppZen is seeking a dynamic, customer-oriented individual to serve as Head of Legal, Commercial. You will lead a fast-moving, collaborative team that impacts all go-to-market aspects of AppZen. This position will work closely with sales, marketing, operations, and finance to oversee the development, negotiation, execution, and ongoing management of contracts with a particular focus on customer, reseller, vendor, and nondisclosure agreements, all in accordance with company policies and procedures and applicable laws. This individual will be responsible for creating and overseeing the legal framework that enables our team to drive ARR growth while ensuring compliance and managing legal risks effectively. Strong candidates will be solutions-driven and independent, with direct experience drafting and negotiating software, cloud, and channel agreements. Primary Duties:
  • Lead and scale the legal function to address the growing needs of a high-performing sales team.
  • Develop and implement legal strategies that support business objectives and facilitate revenue growth
  • Implement and scale AI tools like Luminance to help increase overall impact
  • Provide expert legal advice on a wide range of matters, including contracts, compliance, intellectual property, and risk management
  • Work closely with sales and business development teams to ensure legal terms are favorable while mitigating risks
  • Foster a collaborative and solution-oriented environment that balances emotional intelligence (EQ) with legal expertise (IQ)
  • Stay updated on industry regulations and best practices to ensure the company’s compliance and protect its interests
  • Mentor and develop a high-performing legal team, ensuring alignment with company values and goals
  • Requirements:
  • Have a J.D. degree, be admitted to practice law and be a member in good standing of the California bar
  • 10+ years of relevant contract management experience, particularly negotiating large, complex enterprise agreements with F500 customers
  • Experience in privacy and data protection laws including HIPAA, FINRA, and GDPR
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, and knowledge of UK and EU laws is a plus
  • Experience managing a team with both local and overseas members
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a wide range of complex matters with minimal supervision, often in a time-sensitive and extremely fast-paced environment
  • Strong negotiation skills and a track record of establishing strong working relationships
