Key Responsibilities

 

  1. Clinical Practice:
  • Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical and surgical emergencies.
  • Oversee the stabilisation and resuscitation of critically ill patients.
  • Perform emergency procedures, including intubation, central line placement, and chest tube insertion.
  • Ensure timely transfer or admission of patients requiring further specialised care.

 

  1. Leadership and Management:
  • Lead the emergency team during shifts, ensuring efficient patient care and workload distribution.
  • Develop and implement clinical pathways and protocols for emergency care.
  • Manage departmental operations, including resource allocation and staffing.
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees related to emergency services and patient safety.

 

  1. Education and Training:
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and nursing staff.
  • Organise and deliver training sessions on emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Support staff development through regular appraisals and feedback.

 

  1. Quality Improvement and Governance:
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes to identify areas for improvement.

Communications And Working Relationships

  • Collaborate with critical care, radiology, and surgical teams for comprehensive patient management.
  • Liaise with the nursing staff to ensure high standards of care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families about treatment plans.
  • Engage with administrative staff for operational efficiency.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions.
  • Work with external agencies, including emergency medical services.

Line Management

  • Report directly to the Head of Emergency Medicine.
  • Provide feedback to the Medical Director on departmental operations.
  • Supervise junior doctors, residents, and trainees in the ED.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer for patient care strategies.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Assurance Manager for clinical audits.
  • Work with the Hospital Administrator on resource management.

Qualifications

MBBS or equivalent medical degree

Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (e.g., FCEM, FRCEM, or equivalent)

Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria

Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications

Postgraduate qualifications in critical care or pre-hospital medicine

Certification in ultrasound-guided procedures

Experience

Minimum 5 years of post-specialisation experience in emergency medicine

Proven expertise in managing complex and high-acuity cases

Experience working in resource-limited settings

Research experience with publications in emergency medicine journals
