Community Manager

The Community Manager sits at the heart of People Powered’s mission to expand people’s power to make government decisions around the world. Come join us at the center of a dynamic global movement, where participatory democracy grows through a strong, connected network of peers. In this role, you will grow the collective power of organizations, government practitioners, researchers, and advocates advancing participatory democracy. You will support our global community of members to strengthen capacity, coordinate priorities, and tackle shared challenges, so that the community can better launch, improve, and expand participatory democracy programs.

This role is ideal for a collaborative, globally-minded community builder who is energized by working across cultures and political realities, and who  excels at growing stronger, more connected, more impactful membership communities.

Responsibilities

Member Engagement (30%)

  • Member activities: Develop and deliver member workshops, events, and activities (mostly virtual) that strengthen our community’s knowledge, skills, and relationships; co-create resources and programs; make collective decisions; and raise funding and support for shared priorities. 
  • Member support: Provide ongoing support to members in a way that meets their needs and priorities, in collaboration with other staff and partners
  • Learning: Gather member feedback and use insights to continuously improve community experience and impact.
  • Systems: Maintain and improve member records and documentation.

Community Strategy and Growth (20%)

  • Strategy: Coordinate the cultivation and community growth strategy with the Membership Committee and other key staff. Collaborate with staff to align member activities with People Powered’s programmatic work.
  • Outreach: Recruit and attract new members, to grow and diversify the membership across regions and sectors.
  • Onboarding: Manage and improve member application and onboarding processes, so that new members are welcomed, informed, and engaged.

Governance (20%)

  • Member decision-making: Plan and manage collective governance and decision-making systems, building on existing processes to engage members in making key organizational decisions. 

Communications (20%)

  • Member communication: Coordinate member communication channels, including WhatsApp and email. 
  • Content development: Create content for our blog, newsletter, website, social media and other digital channels, to promote member activities and resources.

Organizational Management and General (10%)

  • Participate in organization-wide meetings, retreats, and other activities. Contribute and review content, provide feedback on plans and proposals, and have fun with our team!

Requirements

Essential

  • At least 3 years experience in managing membership communities, networks or alliances at the international level
  • Proven ability to engage and grow a network of organizations and individuals 
  • Strong community organizing and relationship building skills 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strategic relationships with people and organizations from diverse global regions and work in their service, being mindful about cultural differences and power-dynamics 
  • Passion for and an intermediate understanding of participatory democracy, community empowerment, and equity. Alignment with the People Powered mission and values
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English, including the ability to communicate complex information in clear, compelling, and accessible ways that translate well across languages and contexts.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, and the ability and desire to collaborate with people from diverse cultures
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects and deliverables, including familiarity with project and task management systems (for example, Asana, Airtable) and Google Workspace products (or similar)
  • A flexible and growth-oriented mindset

Desirable

  • Proficiency in another language, such as French, Spanish, or Portuguese is a plus
  • Experience working remotely in a virtual setting and across multiple time zones
  • Experience working with participatory democracy, civic engagement, or related fields

We understand that there are a wide variety of paths toward the skills necessary for the position. As such, there are no formal educational requirements, as long as the applicant can demonstrate proficiency with the desired skills. We do, however, value experience gained through educational programs.

Salary: 

  • $82,000 - $90,000 USD annual salary adjusted for local cost of living. The salary advertised is for locations with the highest cost of living globally and may differ based on the candidate’s city and country, as well as years of experience and additional skills (for example languages).

  • March-April 2026. Dates can be flexible depending on the right candidate.
