Building Commissioning Engineer
Location: Birmingham, AL
A leading energy consulting engineering firm is seeking a Commissioning Engineer to support commissioning and energy assessment projects across multiple sectors, including government, commercial, education, manufacturing, healthcare, and research. This role focuses on ensuring mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems operate efficiently and according to design intent.
Primary Responsibilities
Manage and execute retro-commissioning and new building commissioning projects
Develop commissioning plans, review designs and submittals, and prepare reports
Create and execute functional performance tests and detailed Methods of Procedure
Collaborate with contractors, engineers, and architects to confirm systems meet owner requirements and design intent
Review contractor documentation and vendor submittals
Develop and perform Pre-Functional Checklists and Functional Performance Tests
Troubleshoot and investigate system issues
Verify equipment performance and ensure systems meet specifications
Schedule and coordinate commissioning activities with multiple stakeholders
Observe equipment startup and produce associated reports
Conduct site inspections and maintain issues logs
Use commissioning tools including flow hoods, pressure instruments, and temperature sensors
Write final commissioning reports
Directly interface with owners and clients regarding project expectations
Identify and support implementation of energy conservation measures and calculate savings
Assist with installation energy and water plans (IEWP)
Perform ASHRAE Level I, II, and III audits
Support strategic infrastructure and energy planning initiatives
Required Degrees and Certifications
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
Must pass FE exam within one year of hire
Ability to sit for PE exam within two years
Ability to sit for CEM within one year
Ability to sit for NEBB CxCP within one year
Requirements
2–5 years of experience in the building commissioning field and/or academic co-op commissioning experience
Strong understanding of commercial and industrial HVAC systems (AHUs, VAVs, chiller plants, condenser water plants, boiler plants)
Knowledge of ASHRAE, SMACNA, and NFPA standards
Understanding of HVAC and plumbing/piping design and engineering calculations
Familiarity with building automation systems and sequences of operation
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
Ability to travel approximately 25 percent overnight and 30–50 percent overall
Preferred Experience and Skills
Commissioning experience with mechanical HVACR, electrical, plumbing systems, and building automation systems
Experience using cloud-based commissioning software
Familiarity with Siemens Insight
Experience with AutoCAD and Revit
Familiarity with Carrier’s Hourly Analysis Program
Basic programming knowledge
Understanding of construction documents
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
