Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America is seeking an Clay Modeler Specialist to support the continuous growth and improvement of the North American Design Studio located in Carlsbad, CA. This position requires an exceptional understanding of the clay modeling process defined by the interaction between design, engineering, and 3D model execution. The process requires knowledge and skills needed to produce a quality buck starting with the wood base, foam, and finish clay development, and dinoc for senior management review.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops clay model surfaces from technical drawings, design drawings and rendering.
  • Follows design directives and provide input to the creative process.
  • Familiar with a variety of media including wood, fiberglass, metal and paint in the model making process.
  • Uses, and or is able to learn milling machine operation and digitizing equipment as required to retrieve data and input points on the models.
  • Maintains shop and studio equipment and tools in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintains shop and studio safety compliance.
  • Works and travels abroad as necessary.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years’ this position would require 6+ years’ experience of experience with automotive clay model development or equivalent college training
  • There is no college, which could produce the skill set needed for this position
  • Strong surface development and highlighting skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Highschool Diploma or the equivalent
  • Ability to transform design sketches and verbal instruction into a 3D model
  • This is a physical position that requires constant standing, walking, sitting, bending at the waist, stooping, reaching with arms, hands and additional repetitive motions. This position also requires touching and feeling with hands to manipulate and form clay and foam. Additionally, this position uses warm and cool materials and tools to manipulate clay and foam.

The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on a wide range of factors, including, but not limited to, job-related education, skills, and experience, geographic location, and market conditions. The current salary range for this position is as follows and may be modified in the future: $120,000-$150,000.
