New Leaf Energy seeks a Civil Project Engineer I to join our team supporting our Power Plants division. In this role, you will work with internal engineers, engineering consultants, EPC firms to support construction-level designs and respond to field RFI of renewable energy projects that our Power Plants division is building. This position reports to our Principal Civil Engineer.

This position may be filled out of our Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, and Troy, NY offices. We value in-person collaboration and offer a hybrid work environment. Hybrid employees work in the office at least two out of every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and are free to work from the office or home on other days. About the Role

The Civil Project Engineer I serves as a vital link between the NLE Civil Engineering and Power Plants departments. You will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) focused on engineering activities that drive efficient and on-time project construction. This role involves daily collaboration with internal teams, external engineering consultants, and construction personnel to ensure technical excellence and project delivery.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Serve as the Civil Engineering SME for the Power Plants team;
  • Collaborate with engineering consultants and EPC companies to develop and review CDIFR and CDIFC project plans;
  • Act as the primary technical focal point for responding to external civil RFIs;
  • Author RFPs, bid templates, and scope of service documents;
  • Onboard engineering consultants and subconsultants;
  • Perform civil cost estimation and identify opportunities for Value Engineering;
  • Evaluate third-party change order requests for technical and financial validity;
  • Review ministerial permit applications prepared by the EPC, including stormwater and environmental reports;
  • Liaise with municipal, state, and federal agencies regarding permit applications and renewals;
  • Conduct occasional site visits to field verify engineering consultant/EPC inspections and construction activity reporting;
  • Coordinate with engineering consultants/EPC partners to ensure timely closeout of construction certifications and PTO.

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (Civil P.E. license preferred);
  • 4–8 years in construction management, site development, entitlement, or environmental permitting;
  • Specific experience in Solar PV or Energy Storage is a significant plus;
  • Experience in cost estimation, reviewing engineering services contracts, managing subconsultants;
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and HYDROCAD (or similar design tools) is desired;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead meetings with clients, regulatory officials, and consultants;
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.

New Leaf Energy compensates all employees in three ways: market-competitive base salary, plus above-market variable compensation, plus an equity-like program such that all employees experience the benefits of ownership.  We use a data-driven and transparent methodology to calibrate compensation that is externally competitive and internally equitable, guided by the New Leaf Energy compensation manual, which is available to all employees.

Under our compensation framework, the likely base salary range for this position is $xThe on-target annual cash bonus associated with this position is an additional 10% percent of base salary. Your actual salary may be above, in, or below this range, depending on your location and experience. Our office locations in Lowell, Boston, Oakland, and Chicago all carry geography-based upward adjustments to the base pay range.
