The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operational functions of the pharmacy consulting firm. This role ensures operational excellence, scalable growth, financial discipline, and consistent delivery of high-quality consulting services to clients across the pharmacy and healthcare ecosystem.
The COO partners closely with the CEO and executive leadership team to translate strategy into execution, driving organizational effectiveness, operational efficiency, and measurable client outcomes.
Essential Functions:
Operational Leadership
- Oversee all internal operations including consulting delivery, client services, project management, workforce planning, and technology enablement
- Build scalable operational infrastructure to support firm growth, new service lines, and geographic expansion
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive accountability, productivity, and profitability
- Champion process optimization and best practices across consulting engagements and internal operations
Financial & Business Management
- Partner with Finance to manage budgeting, forecasting, revenue optimization, and margin improvement
- Oversee resource utilization, pricing models, engagement economics, and consulting capacity planning
- Ensure operational alignment with financial targets and strategic growth initiatives
Consulting Delivery & Client Experience
- Ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of pharmacy consulting services across all client engagements
- Implement standardized methodologies, tools, and playbooks to improve outcomes and scalability
- Support senior consultants and practice leaders in complex client situations and strategic initiatives
- Drive a strong client experience culture focused on measurable value, responsiveness, and retention
Strategic Execution
- Translate firm strategy into executable operational plans with clear milestones and ownership
- Lead cross-functional initiatives including acquisitions, partnerships, and service line launches
- Evaluate and deploy technology solutions (CRM, PSA, analytics, compliance tools) to improve efficiency
People & Culture
- Lead talent strategy including recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and retention
- Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture aligned with the firm’s mission and values
- Develop leadership bench strength and succession planning across the organization
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to applicable healthcare regulations, data privacy, and client confidentiality standards (e.g., HIPAA)
Mitigate operational and client delivery risks through effective controls and governance
Required Experience & Skills
- 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in:
- Pharmacy consulting
- Healthcare professional services
- Pharmacy operations, PBM, or healthcare advisory organizations
- Proven experience scaling operations within a consulting or service-based firm
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, margins, and operational KPIs
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and operational transformation initiatives
Preferred Background
- Experience working with independent pharmacies, specialty pharmacy, PBMs, health systems, or pharmacy networks
- Familiarity with pharmacy regulations, reimbursement models, and evolving healthcare delivery trends
- Advanced degree (MBA, MHA, PharmD, or similar) preferred
