Lead financial strategy for a $107M non-profit, driving sustainable funding models and enhancing accountability to support Oregon’s vulnerable children and families.

Chief Financial Officer - large non-profit organization with state-wide impact.

MISSION OF ROLE

As CFO of Oregon Child Development Coalition, you’ll be a strategic thought partner to the CEO and a key member of the executive team—leading financial strategy to fuel life-changing early education across the state. This is a rare opportunity to align fiscal leadership with mission impact for a $107M nonprofit, ensuring every dollar strengthens programs that serve Oregon’s most vulnerable children and families.

We’re looking for a values-driven leader who sees financial stewardship as a tool for opportunity to lead a finance function that powers long-term impact.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND OUTCOMES:

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Act as a trusted and visionary ambassador to financial stakeholders—including investors, funders, auditors, and policymakers—to strengthen the organization’s financial reputation and partnership potential.
  • Co-create innovative, sustainable funding models (e.g., for-profit preschool, fee-for-service pilots) that align with mission impact while proactively assessing risk and long-term viability.
  • Embed a culture of accountability and excellence in grant management by strengthening systems for compliance, performance tracking, and transparent reporting for public and private funders.
  • Partner with the Board Finance Committee to shape financial strategies and multi-year scenario planning that fuel mission growth and organizational resilience.

Finance and Accounting Team Leadership

  • Build and lead a high-functioning accounting and finance department team; attract, motivate, mentor, develop, and retain highly effective accounting and finance talent.
  • Develop team workflows and systems to foster clarity, ownership, and excellence in cross-functional operations including payroll, procurement, and grant compliance.
  • Elevate team capacity through targeted coaching and knowledge-building in technical competencies (e.g., cost allocation, dashboarding, grant compliance), driving both individual growth and collective capability.
  • Champion adaptive change leadership: guide staff through complex transitions with empathy and clarity, fostering alignment and buy-in through transparent communication, iterative learning, and feedback-informed adaptation.

Financial Infrastructure and Operations

  • Leverage modern financial tools (e.g., Workday dashboards) to unlock real-time insights, enabling agile decision-making across the organization.
  • Build a proactive financial insight engine: deliver timely, audience-specific data (e.g., budget-to-actuals, cash flow forecasting) that empowers leaders to make strategic, impact-aligned decisions.
  • Advance the organization’s planning and investment readiness by strengthening data accuracy, financial forecasting, and reporting capabilities across teams and departments.
  • Develop integrated, forward-looking models (e.g., predictive, activity-based costing) that illuminate opportunities, surface risks, and inform future-facing strategies for growth and transformation.

Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • 10+ years of financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior finance role
  • Proven experience overseeing complex budgets, cost allocation plans, and audit readiness
  • Experience managing ERP systems (e.g., Workday) and building dashboard tools for executive decision-making
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required;

Preferred:

  • CPA or relevant Master's degree
  • Understanding of non-profit state and federal law for non-profit operations.
  • Past oversight of cross-functional areas such as IT, procurement, facilities, or payroll strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of federally funded programs (e.g., Head Start, Title I, Medicaid), grant compliance and nonprofit audit best practices.
