About the role

The successful candidate will be a senior member of the claims team for Coalition Claims Solutions Canada, Inc. (“Coalition”). They will handle a pending file load while providing oversight and guidance to Coalition’s team of adjusters in Canada, representing Coalition to brokers and vendors, and providing mentoring support to Coalition’s business development and underwriting teams. This is a senior licensed role, requiring a Level 3 (or equivalent) license in at least one province, with a willingness and ability to obtain equivalent licenses throughout all common law Canadian provinces. The role will report to the Senior Claims Manager.

This is a remote opportunity that can be based anywhere in Canada.

Responsibilities

I. Regulatory Oversight & Management

As the Claims Lead, you will be responsible for organizational oversight, compliance, and mentoring functions within the Canadian entity:

  • Compliance and Oversight: Liaise with Canadian legal and compliance teams in order to ensure compliance with provincial regulations and applicable ethical codes.
  • Team Supervision: Oversee the conduct of all claims handlers through a dotted line reporting structure.
  • Disputes and Complaints: Oversee the handling of broker and policyholder feedback to ensure complaints are addressed promptly.
  • Auditing and Control: Periodically assess the effectiveness of the firm’s controls including conducting regular claim file audits.
  • Loss Fund Implementation: Liaise with broader teams in implementing and operating a carrier loss fund.
  • Vendor Management: Manage Coalition’s relationships with law firms and vendors to ensure the best quality services for policyholders.
  • Legal Expertise: Maintain familiarity with the laws and regulations that apply to insurance adjusting firms throughout Canada while staying abreast of new legal developments affecting cyber claims.
  • Training & Licensure: Train new and existing claim handlers and monitor handler licensing.

II. Claims Handling & Resolution

The Claims Lead will handle a pending file load consisting of complex cyber claims across Coalition, including:

  • Complex Claims Management: Handle intricate primary and excess Cyber, Tech, and Media policies, including those involving third-party liability arising from security failures and data breaches.
  • Intake & Coordination: Lead the intake of events, coordinating with breach counsel, forensic investigators, and other critical vendors.
  • Liability & Coverage Assessment: Assess liability, damage, and insurance coverage issues.
  • Financial & Reserves: Evaluate the full pending of claims, recommend accurate reserves, and identify settlement opportunities to maximize impact.
  • Vendor Management: Intelligently guide and track third-party vendors and service providers, including breach coaches, defense counsel, and coverage counsel, ensuring appropriate work and spend.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate in the defense and resolution of claims and liaise with partner carriers on a daily basis.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate file documentation and information in Coalition’s claims system.

III. External and Internal Support

The Claims Lead will also be expected to support Coalition’s growth throughout Canada and build capacity internally by:

  • External Support: Supporting Coalition’s business development and underwriting teams to build and maintain Coalition’s relationships with brokers, risk managers, and other key partners in the insurance industry.
  • Internal Support: Guide and develop underwriters with ongoing training, mentorship, and critical data-driven insights.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience handling complex insurance claims, with a preference for cyber, P&C or specialty lines.
  • Must hold highest-level adjusting licenses in one or more Canadian common law provinces and territories, and be eligible and willing to obtain non-resident licenses in additional common law provinces.
  • Juris Doctor or Bachelors Degree is preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage and ensure compliance with provincial insurance regulators (AMF, etc.) and applicable ethical codes.
  • Excellent communication and interactive skills, capable of interacting effectively with provincial regulators, the board of directors, and various insured parties (Grievance, General Counsel, Risk Managers).
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing, mentoring, and ensuring the professional conduct and compliance of a claims team.
  • Strong aptitude to work proactively and excel in a collegial, changing, and goal-oriented work environment.

Compensation

As a remote-first organization, our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several Canadian geographic markets. 

In Alberta, British Columbia & Ontario the base salary for this position ranges from $144,000.00/year up to $194,000.00/year. 

For all other locations, the base salary for this position ranges from $129,600/year up to $162,000/year. 

Consistent with applicable laws, an employee's pay within this range is based on a number of factors, which include but are not limited to relevant education, skills, job-related knowledge, qualifications, work experience, credentials, and/or geographic location. Your Recruiter can share more on the specific target salary range for your location during the interview process. Coalition, Inc. reserves the right to modify this range as needed.
