Business Systems Engineer

TLDR

Transform business operations by integrating various tools and automating workflows to drive insightful decision-making within a rapidly scaling company.

About CoLab

At CoLab, we help mechanical engineering teams bring life-changing products to market years sooner.

CoLab is the AI platform for driving stronger engineering decisions. Every design review in CoLab builds a knowledge repository of design feedback, decisions, and lessons learned -- which AI agents draw from to flag issues on future designs before they compound. The more your team works in CoLab, the smarter it gets and the faster you arrive at the ideal design. Companies like Ford, Komatsu, and Johnson Controls use CoLab to catch issues earlier, eliminate rework cycles, and bring products to market faster.

Founded in St. John’s, Newfoundland, CoLab has grown quickly from our first customer in 2019 to a rapidly scaling company. We’ve recently been recognized on Deloitte’s Fast 50™ and Fast 500™, and named a Canadian company to watch by The Globe and Mail and Financial Post.

About the Role

We’ve built a product that’s transforming how engineering teams work. Now we’re turning that same lens inward.

As our first Business Systems Engineer, you’ll connect the systems that run our business—Slack, Notion, Gong, HubSpot, G-Suite, GitHub, Mixpanel, Figma, Linear, ChatGPT—and turn scattered data into clear, decision-ready insight.

You’ll use tools like Retool and well-documented APIs to rapidly prototype internal integrations, automate workflows, and build dashboards people actually use. The goal is for this person to have strong UI skills.

You’ll work closely with RevOps, Product, Finance and other business areas to understand messy, real-world problems—often from people who aren’t technical—and translate them into clean, secure integrations and intuitive UIs.

If you like being a force multiplier—unlocking disproportionate value with relatively small technical effort—you’ll love this role.

Our Ideal Candidate

You’re pragmatic. You know when low-code is the right answer—and when it’s not.You care about how things look and feel. A dashboard isn’t done just because it works; it’s done when someone non-technical can use it without explanation. You’re security-minded. You understand that revenue data, customer calls, and internal conversations can’t be casually piped around. You’re comfortable writing Python or JavaScript when needed—but you’re not precious about building everything from scratch.

Job Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain internal integrations using Retool and APIs (Slack, Notion, Gong, HubSpot, GitHub, Mixpanel, etc.)
  • Design and ship clean, intuitive internal dashboards that drive executive and team decisions
  • Partner with functional leaders to identify high-leverage automation opportunities
  • Ensure data security, access controls, and responsible handling of sensitive information
  • Consolidate data from multiple sources into clear, reliable internal reporting views
  • Gradually evolve prototypes into more robust internal applications as needs mature

Qualifications

  • Experience working with APIs and integrating SaaS tools
  • Working knowledge of Python and/or JavaScript
  • Experience with (or strong interest in) Retool or similar low-code platforms

  • Comfort working cross-functionally with non-technical stakeholders
  • Clear understanding of data privacy and security best practices
  • Bonus: Experience in RevOps, internal tooling, analytics, or startup environments.
