We’re looking for a Business Development Group Leader in the Innovation and Partnerships Office (IPO). In this role, you will be responsible for the management and supervision of a team of Business Development Executives who are responsible for engagement with internal stakeholders, managing intellectual property development, industry collaborations and commercialization of technology portfolios in Life Sciences, Biotech, and Healthcare; Laser and Optics; Defense and National Security; AI/Machine Learning, Quantum, Computing, and Space; Software and Data; Advanced Manufacturing and Instrumentation; and Chemicals and Materials, and Energy. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization. 

You will

  • Supervise, lead, train, and mentor the Business Development team in the management of intellectual property (IP) and technology portfolios, marketing, and partnering/licensing strategies, including negotiation and closing skills. Serve as a mentor to other IPO staff in business development and commercialization broadly.
  • Collaborate with LLNL leadership and DOE stakeholders within defined functional and programmatic areas to support the completion of program objectives and contribute to ongoing initiatives. Communicate operational updates and progress to management.
  • Provide operational advice and recommendations to the IPO Director and technical leaders on partnership opportunities, commercialization activities, and technology transfer processes. Support strategic planning by contributing subject matter expertise on business development activities.
  • Manage an assigned IP portfolio, in cooperation with Directorates, Programs, and other stakeholders.
  • Actively participate in the IPO Management team, collaborate to identify organizational needs, provide input and insight into cross-discipline workflows, and lead projects to achieve the mission, vision, and goals of IPO.
  • Represent LLNL and IPO on internal technology transfer and business development committees and working groups.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the SEL.5 level

  • Engage with LLNL leadership external to IPO in functional and programmatic areas, and DOE stakeholders to complete institutional and programmatic objectives, execute long-term goals, and champion initiatives.
  • Serve as an advisor, providing strategic advice to the IPO Director, Lab senior managers, and technical leaders on strategic partnerships, commercialization, IP, and technology transfer.
  • Represent LLNL and IPO, as an expert, on internal and external technology transfer and business development committees, organizations, networks, and working groups.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the physical sciences or engineering or other related areas, or the equivalent combination of education and industrial experience in a related business, operational and/or organizational area.
  • Significant commercial business development experience in a high-tech industry, assessing technology portfolios, leading, negotiating, and executing complex partnership agreements.
  • Highly advanced understanding of current trends and business practices related to technology transfer and experience with contractual mechanisms for partnering between FFRDCs and private sector entities.
  • Subject matter expert in IP, including patenting and copyright rules and processes. Demonstrated experience applying IP principles to technology transfer projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience, including leading teams or projects. Proven ability to build and maintain relationships within the organization and with external partners.
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing solutions to complex problems requiring in-depth analysis of multiple factors and the creative use of established and innovative methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to goal setting, strategic planning, and execution of project/program objectives, often leading the implementation of plans within a defined scope.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills necessary to effectively explain, present, direct, negotiate and influence others. Excellent communication skills, including speaking, writing, presenting, listening and negotiating with technical, legal, and business professionals.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level

  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with IP, patenting, and copyright rules and processes.
  • Extensive leadership skills and experience supervising others, leading teams and/or groups.
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive problems that require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors and extremely creative/innovative approaches.
  • Extensive experience in high-level goal setting, strategic planning, and directing and accomplishing project/program goals and objectives.
  • Extensive experience serving as an advisor to senior leaders.

Qualifications We Desire

  • MBA, J.D., or advanced technical degree.
  • Existing broad relationships within the business community.
  • Experience with DOE regulations on technology commercialization, and intellectual property, including familiarity with applicable DOE orders, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and DEAR clauses.
