The AV Design Engineer is a technical specialist role responsible for designing reliable, functional, and fit-for-purpose audio-visual and unified communications solutions. This role focuses on translating user, operational, and technical requirements into clear, compliant, and buildable system designs that support consistent project delivery and long-term usability.
The position works in project delivery, to technically advise on solutions that are validated, practical to install, maintained, and supported.
Requirements
What you'll do:
- Design and develop complex, customised AV solutions aligned to client requirements, use cases, and industry standards.
- Produce high-quality technical documentation including schematics, signal flow diagrams, rack layouts, cable schedules, and device lists.
- Create functional system descriptions and control system programming briefs to support delivery and commissioning.
- Select appropriate AV, control, and network technologies based on performance, interoperability, lifecycle support, and sustainability.
- Ensure solutions are usable, maintainable, scalable, and support long-term operational requirements.
- Act as the technical authority during solution sign-off and handover to installation and delivery teams.
- Provide technical guidance and escalation support to installation teams throughout project delivery.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks during design and implementation.
- Participate in design reviews, technical validation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Ensure design consistency, version control, and adherence to internal design standards and best practices.
- Attend project and client meetings as the technical escalation point, providing expert advice on complex AV design and integration challenges.
- Support commissioning and troubleshooting where design clarification is required.
- Engage with internal teams and stakeholders to clarify requirements and ensure designs are practical, supportable, and aligned to delivery outcomes.
- Stay current with emerging AV technologies and contribute to continuous improvement of design standards and processes.
What you'll bring:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering, Electronics, Audio Visual Technology, IT, or similar discipline.
- Industry certifications such as AVIXA CTS-D or equivalent are advantageous.
- Intermediate experience in an estimating and/or technical delivery role within the AV industry.
- In depth technical knowledge of AV systems, including audio, video, control systems, and integration and strong successful application into complex solution development.
- Technical design of room schematics and detail for implementation and coordination with clients, builders, consultants etc.
- Proficiency with AV design and control software (e.g., Crestron, QSC, AMX, AutoCAD).
- Experience producing professional engineering documentation and drawings.
- Practical understanding of industry standards and best practice design methodologies to create compliant outcomes.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex information to IT and non-IT stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and a commitment to meeting tight deadlines.
- Ability to manage ambiguity and adapt to a rapidly changing business environment to prioritise accordingly.
- Strong interpersonal skills, intellectual rigour and curiosity, and ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
